Lightspeed is an Autobot scientist and a member of the Technobots sub-group, fulfilling the role of data processor for the team. He's arguably the smartest and wisest member of the Technobots, not to mention the most good-looking by Cybertronian standards. He is also a stargazer and a dreamer; his greatest wish in life is to be reconfigured into a spacecraft so that he might freely explore the universe to satisfy his wanderlust. However, until the war with the Decepticons is won, Lightspeed remains diligent in his duty to the Autobot cause.

Among all Transformers, Lightspeed suffers a unique ailment: he is allergic to energon, the basic fuel and lifeblood of Cybertronians. Any form of energon, regardless of what fuel source it was converted from, will cause Lightspeed's engine to stall and bring out a bad case of rust-rash. As such, he needs to ingest a special lead sulfide additive in order to refuel without suffering any ill-effects.

History[]

The Transformers (G1 cartoon)[]

Lightspeed and the other Technobots were introduced in the episode "Grimlock's New Brain". In fact, it was Grimlock - temporarily blessed with super-intelligence - who created the Technobots in the first place. While the Autobots were battling the Decepticons on the exterior of Unicron's head, Grimlock entered the Chaos-Bringer's cranium and built five new robots from various scattered parts. Once all five were built, they aided the Autobots in battle and even defeated the mighty Abominus by merging into Computron.

In the episode "Money is Everything", Lightspeed led Afterburner and Nosecone as they came to the aid of Scattershot and Strafe, who were being attacked by the Terrorcon Hun-Gurr. He later accompanied Scattershot, Strafe and the free trader Dirk Manus in search of a Quintesson base on Titan, waxing poetical along the way about the chance to explore space and see the planets and moons up close. However, the Technobots were shot down by Abominus and crash-landed on Titan, where they came under attack from Sharkticons. Lightspeed had Strafe blast down some vines to ensnare their attackers, buying time for the damaged group to flee. The timely arrival of Nosecone, Afterburner, and Marissa Fairborn finally ended the attack for good. Led by trader Manus to the Quintesson base, the group were taken captive by Manus en route. Manus vaporized the group with the Recreator weapon... then reformed them, having healed their injuries. The Technobots defeated the Terrorcons and drove off the Quints. Back on Earth, Lightspeed reported to Fairborn that the credits they'd confiscated from the Quintessons were gone, evidently stolen by Manus. Lightspeed and Fairborn shared a good laugh once Fairborn revealed that they were nothing more than mimic dust.
