Dr. Robotnik (formerly known as Julian) was the primary antagonist of the 1993 animated cartoon Sonic the Hedgehog. Based on the character of Dr. Eggman from the video game series, he was a maniacal scientist with an obsession for robotics as well as a deep disdain for the natural world. Hungry for power and control, he successfully conquered the planet Mobius after staging a coup against the former King, going on to establish a globe-spanning technocratic empire. His reign was constantly opposed by Sonic the Hedgehog and his rag-tag group of Freedom Fighters.

History[]

Early life[]

JulianSnivelyBlastPast

Little is known about Robotnik's early life. He was once known by the name "Julian" and had aided the Acorn Kingdom as its War Minister during a conflict known as the Great War. Following the war, Julian was appointed as Minister of Science and he worked closely with the court wizard Naugus. After finding out about Naugus' plans to overthrow the kingdom, he decided to take the wizard out of the picture, banishing him to a dimensional warp known as the Void. He then proceeded to plan his own coup, enlisting the aid of his nephew Snively. He also stole the plans for the Roboticizer, a device invented by Sir Charles Hedgehog that could heal injured people by converting damaged body parts into machinery. With it, Julian planned to completely convert the population into robots, erasing their free will and reducing them to mindless slaves.

Using the very robots he had created to help win the Great War, Julian - renaming himself "Robotnik" - seized control of the city of Mobotropolis, rechristening it "Robotropolis". After capturing King Acorn, he had the monarch banished to the Void and began rounding up citizens to be roboticized. He also deployed the Destroyer, an airship that travelled the globe destroying much of Mobius' natural environment, all part of Robotnik's plan to industrialize the entire planet.

Ten years into Robotnik's rule, the Great Forest was one of the few untainted areas left on Mobius. From there, the Freedom Fighters would oppose Robotnik's empire, striking out from their hidden village of Knothole.

Season One[]

"Heads or Tails"[]

In the series' pilot episode, Robotnik hatched a plan to destroy the Great Forest and reveal the Freedom Fighters' hideout of Knothole. He developed a deadly chemical that he planned to have his Buzz Bomber robots dump over the forest, killing all of the plant life. Expecting Sonic to interfere with this scheme, Robotnik had also developed a new weapon: the Hedgehog-Seeking Missile.

Unfortunately for Robotnik, Sonic and Tails caught wind of this plan and managed to return to Knothole to warn their Freedom Fighter compatriots. When the Buzz Bomber swarm later invaded the Great Forest, the Freedom Fighters had set up catapults on the edge of the forest and launched water balloons at the insectoid robots, causing them to malfunction and drop the canisters containing the plant-killing chemicals.

"Sonic Boom"[]

Dr. Robotnik later followed Sally and Antoine's activities after they received a message from Ironlock Prison in the Dark Swamp by having one of his Surveillance Orbs observe their movements. Sometime later, Snively brought Cat, who had been caught in Robotropolis, to him. Robotnik began to interrogate Cat, but when he did not want to answer him, Robotnik had Cat sent away to an unknown fate. When Sonic later ran through the Dark Swamp, Robotnik ordered one of his Stealthbots to be sent after him. Later, after Snively detected Sonic, Sally and Antoine just outside Robotropolis, Robotnik told him to send the Stealthbots. However, the Stealthbots exploded soon after takeoff due to sabotage.

"Sonic & Sally"[]

Sonic and Sally 205

When the Freedom Fighters attempted to bomb a SWATbot factory, their leader, Princess Sally Acorn, was captured. Dr. Robotnik decided to set a trap for Sonic by creating a robotic replica of Sally and programming it with her personality and memories. The replica was planted in a detention cell for Sonic to "rescue" while Robotnik attempted to roboticize the real Princess, only for the Roboticizer to conveniently malfunction. The resulting power surge also disabled the visual link from the Sally robot's vision, so Robotnik couldn't see her arrival in Knothole. However, its communicator still worked, allowing Robotnik to listen in on everything happening around the robot. As such, Robotnik was able to prepare his defences accordingly when the Freedom Fighters made another attempt to destroy his factory.

When the Freedom Fighters returned to Robotropolis the next day, SWATbot patrols had increased and knew just where to look for the rebels. However, the Sally robot was exposed when she failed to perform a secret handshake with Sonic and was promptly disabled. Rotor the Walrus tinkered with the android so that it told them where to find the real Sally and how to bypass the defences around the SWATbot factory. With his robot presumed lost, Robotnik was determined to roboticize Sally, but the Roboticizer continued to malfunction. As the power went down inside Robotnik's fortress, Sonic entered with the Sally robot, freeing Sally and placing the replica into the Roboticizer in her place. As Sonic and Sally fled without Snively noticing, the Roboticizer finally activated, but caused the Sally robot to malfunction and go berserk.

"Sonic and the Secret Scrolls"[]

Robotnik Laser

When the Freedom Fighters traveled to the ancient city of Maga to find the lost Secret Scrolls, their aircraft was detected by Robotnik's radar. Eager to obtain the Scrolls for himself, Robotnik traveled to Maga along with Snively and several SWATbots. Sonic, however, distracted Robotnik and his lackeys, thus allowing his friends to escape. Taking matters into his own hands, Robotnik tried shooting Sonic with a laser gun until the hedgehog retreated. In response, Robotnik had Snively deploy a Surveillance Orb to track Sonic. Robotnik, Snively and the SWATbots subsequently followed Sonic to a tunnel, which Sonic was hiding in. However, the villains suddenly got blown off a cliff by a gust of wind coming out of the tunnel. The Freedom Fighters hoped that Robotnik hadn't survived the fall, but as they left, the doctor and Snively climbed up from a cliff, swearing revenge against the heroes.

"Super Sonic"[]

After witnessing one of his SWATbots being destroyed by a mysterious being on the border of the Forbidden Zone, Robotnik had Snively investigate the stranger. A search through the database revealed that the Forbidden Zone was the resting place of an evil wizard known as Lazaar, who possessed a powerful magitech computer. After learning that Lazaar could be woken by a fellow evil-doer, Robotnik decided to investigate the Forbidden Zone himself. Arriving at the entrance to the Forbidden Zone, he was approached by the Guardian, the robed stranger that protected Lazaar's resting place. Sensing the evil within Robotnik's heart, the Guardian allowed the dictator to pass.

Robotnik steals Lazaar's computer

While he claimed that he wished to wake Lazaar, Robotnik was really only interested in the wizard's computer, which he took for himself and left Lazaar slumbering. Back at his headquarters, Robotnik studied the computer's list of spells, taking a particular interest in its teleportation function. He attempted to use the computer to teleport Sonic into his midst, but discovered that the hedgehog was out of range. Instead, he teleported Sally and Bunnie Rabbot to his fortress, then used the computer's hypnosis spell to bend the two to his will.

A while later, Robotnik was able to teleport Sonic to his fortress once the hedgehog had come into range of the teleportation spell. He then ordered the hypnotized Sally and Bunnie to throw Sonic into the Roboticizer, but Sonic broke free and took Lazaar's computer. After Sonic neutralized the spells Robotnik had cast, Sonic, Sally and Bunnie fled with the computer and returned it to Lazaar.

"Sonic Racer"[]

Sonic Racer 120

After the Freedom Fighters sabotaged Robotropolis' main power generator, Robotnik and Snively came up with a plot to trap Sonic by appealing to his ego and challenging him to a race. Robotnik then built a robotic cheetah to race against Sonic and prepared several SWATbot hover-pods to participate as well. As expected, Sonic arrived the next day to take part in the race while the other Freedom Fighters used the event as a distraction to sabotage Robotnik's backup generator.

After greeting Sonic at the starting line, Robotnik returned to his fortress to watch the hedgehog's progress. Snively had prepared a number of traps on the racecourse, but Sonic managed to overcome each of them as the race wore on, with Robotnik becoming angrier as his hated enemy continuously escaped and mocked his attempts to destroy him. As the race reached its climax, Sonic left the course to help Sally and her team finish their mission. They escaped just as the power plant exploded, sending Robotropolis into a blackout. As the lights went out in his war room, Robotnik's eyes cast a sinister red light as he angrily glared at Snively.

"Hooked on Sonics"[]

Dr. Robotnik later sent the Shredder to cut down the trees in the Great Forest and take the life energy from them. The Shredder, however, was destroyed, and when Robotnik found out about it, he destroyed the SWATbot commanding the operation and ordered Snively to rebuild the Shredder. While later working on the Sonic Radar, Robotnik received a message from Antoine Depardieu, who wanted to meet him and give him a Power Ring. While Robotnik initially wanted to send his SWATbots to capture Antoine and have them bring him the Power Ring, he found out that he had to meet Antoine alone. Dr. Robotnik thus flew to his meeting place with Antoine in his hovercraft.

Hooked10

After arriving there, however, Robotnik fell into a pit trap that Antoine had set for him. Antoine then revealed that this was all a part of his plan to capture him and bring him to Knothole. In response, Robotnik flew out of the pit trap using his rocket boots and began firing lasers from his fingers at him. He then took the Power Ring from Antoine, before taking Antoine to Robotropolis.

When Sonic later ran out to rescue Antoine, Robotnik placed the Power Ring in his Sonic Radar and began firing an energy mortar at Sonic. After Sonic stopped moving, Robotnik sent some SWATbots out to finish his arch-enemy. He then sent Antoine to the Roboticizer, before heading to the Great Forest with Snively and the new Shredder to resume their deforestation operation. After some time, however, Sonic and Antoine came running towards them again, and Robotnik ordered them to be shot with the energy mortar. Eventually though, Sonic and Antoine tricked the weapon into firing at the second Shredder, destroying it. However, they were soon surrounded by SWATbots. Just as Robotnik got ready to shoot them personally, however, Antoine pulled the Power Ring out of the Sonic Radar and handed it over to Sonic. The heroes subsequently fled into the Great Forest, leaving Robotnik with nothing.

"Harmonic Sonic"[]

Dr. Robotnik later sent his Sky Spy space station, which he had equipped with spy sensors to locate Knothole with, into space. When the Sky Spy later detected radio signals coming from the Great Forest, Robotnik ordered a Stealthbot to be deployed to check it out. Sonic and Rotor, however, destroyed the Stealthbot. Later, Snively informed Robotnik that Sonic and Rotor were onboard the Sky Spy. Although Robotnik ordered the entire crew onboard the Sky Spy to be alerted to the intruders, Sonic and Rotor still managed to sabotage the Sky Spy and escape. Later, when the Sky Spy was about to break down, Robotnik ordered Snively to call off the Stealthbot searching the Great Forest and abandon the mission.

"Sonic's Nightmare"[]

Sonic's Nightmare 110

In an effort to further pollute Mobius' environment, Dr. Robotnik created the Cloud Burster: an airborne ship that was supposed to collect chemicals from the Island of Nimbus and spray them into the atmosphere in order to create toxic rain. Eventually, Robotnik came to the island in person, where Snively introduced him to Sally, Antoine and Bunnie, whom he had caught. Robotnik wanted them to tell him the location of Knothole, but when they refused to say anything, he locked them in a cage in order to lure Sonic into his grasp.

When Sonic later appeared, Robotnik fired a homing fireball at him. However, Sonic took shelter in the nearby river, which extinguished the projectile. Robotnik then sent SWATbots to capture Sonic. After his SWATbots failed as well, Robotnik began to spray chemicals into the atmosphere onboard the Cloud Burster with Snively. Sonic, however, managed to trigger a massive oil sprout, which flooded the entire Cloud Burster. Robotnik and Snively thus fled to Robotnik's hovercraft and activated its stealth mode in order to stay hidden. Onboard the hovercraft, Robotnik tried to launch a missile at Sonic. Although Snively warned him that firing that missile would cause their damaged hovercraft to crash, Robotnik wanted to defeat Sonic at all costs and tried to fire the missile anyway. However, the missile would not launch due to circuitry damage, leaving Robotnik with no choice but to return to Robotropolis in defeat.

"Sub-Sonic"[]

Using a series of robotic Snake Probes, Robotnik attempted to drill into a deep underground reservoir full of oil. His drilling operations had caused widespread destruction and pollution, leading to the extinction of the subterranean Kraken species. His oil drilling drew the attention of the Freedom Fighters, whose crops were dying as a result of the pollution caused by his operation. Sonic boarded the drilling platform, dispatching its crew of SWATbots before overloading its systems by tampering with the computer controls. Robotnik watched from his hovercraft with frustration as Sonic destroyed the platform.

"Sonic Past Cool"[]

Sonic Past Cool 239

After discovering a herd of Terapods migrating towards an unknown location, Robotnik made plans to capture and roboticize them. He and Snively subsequently flew after the Terapods in Robotnik's hovercraft, with an escort of Stealthbots accompanying them. Their pursuit of the Terapods eventually took them to the Great Jungle, where they saw that the Terapods were being accompanied by Sonic and his friends. Within the jungle, the Stealthbots detected a pair of Terapods and the Knothole Freedom Fighters using heat sensors. Robotnik soon after created a force-field around the Terapods and the heroes that prevented them from escaping. With the Terapods trapped, Robotnik grabbed Momma T with a cage and began to reel her onto his hovercraft. Sonic and Bunnie, however, freed Momma T from the cage, and Sonic created a hole in the force-field with a Power Ring-empowered Super Spin that allowed his friends and the Terapods to escape. Regardless, Robotnik continued to look for the heroes, until Sonic caught his attention and lured him to a field where Scorch Plants grew. The Scorch Plants had metal-eating properties and the Stealthbots suffered terminal damage just by touching them. However, Robotnik managed to stabilize his hovercraft's course in the last minute to avoid his machines' fate. Having lost the pack of Terapods, Robotnik had no choice but to give up the chase.

Season Two[]

"Game Guy"[]

After having captured the members of another Freedom Fighter cell, Robotnik promised one of the members - Ari - that he would free his friends if Ari helped him with luring Sonic into a trap. To this end, he programmed two SWATbots to pretend to chase after Ari in order to trick Sonic into thinking that Ari was on his side. While Snively remarked that Sally's natural suspicion could be a problem, Robotnik remarked that he only needed Sonic to believe Ari's words.

Game Guy 176

Ari succeeded in fulfilling his part of the scheme, luring Sonic to what appeared to be an ancient fortress. The fortress' exterior was merely a hologram, however; the location was actually a hi-tech facility that housed a giant pinball game. After Sonic was locked up in the fortress, Robotnik appeared on a nearby monitor and introduced Sonic to the large pinball table in front of him and the rules of his game: if he hit his bumpers on the table, he would score points for himself and a portal into the Void would close. However, the opposite would happen if the hedgehog hit Robotnik's bumpers.

During the game, Robotnik tried various ways to throw Sonic into the portal. He was interrupted, however, by the appearance of Ari, who demanded the release of his Freedom Fighters. Robotnik, however, revealed that he had already roboticized Ari's comrades. To add insult to injury, Robotnik then prepared to send Ari to the Roboticizer as well. In that moment, however, Sally and Dulcy appeared. Dulcy then froze Robotnik and Snively with her ice breath, while Ari neutralized the SWATbots. After some time, Robotnik returned to play with Sonic. However, Ari soon came to save Sonic. With his help, Sonic got his Power Ring and used it to destroy the pinball table. In response, Robotnik turned on the full power of the portal into the Void and hung up. In the end, Sonic managed to escape from the fortress, while Ari got sucked into the Void.

"Sonic Conversion"[]

Sonic Conversion 016

When Sonic and the Freedom Fighters were conducting a raid to sabotage Robotnik's latest project, the doctor and Snively had already prepared the project's test phase. Using a virtual-reality interface, Robotnik took control of the Shriekbot, an unmanned attack plane supposedly capable of surpassing Sonic's speed. However, Sonic and Sally escaped the Shriekbot thanks to the power of a Power Ring. This made Robotnik furious, because Snively had promised him that the Shriekbot would be able to catch Sonic. As Robotnik threatened Snively, the latter promised that he would add more jet engines to the Shriekbot, meaning that it would not let him down next time.

Later on, Sonic ran into Robotropolis, feigning surrender, allowing a pair of SWATbots to take him to Robotnik's fortress. While Sonic claimed that the stress of rebellion had finally got to him, Robotnik wasn't convinced, but nevertheless sent Sonic to the Roboticizer. However, Sonic broke free and destroyed the SWATbots before throwing Robotnik into his chair and spinning it around. With Robotnik stuck in his chair, Sonic stole a component he needed from the Roboticizer and escaped.

Shriekbot

Sometime afterward, Robotnik saw that the roboticized Sir Charles Hedgehog had caught Sonic. As such, Robotnik ordered the Shriekbot to be deployed. This time, he almost caught Sonic. However, Robotnik soon found himself getting lured into a narrow isthmus between two buildings. Being unable to fit in-between the buildings, the Shriekbot was destroyed.

"No Brainer"[]

Robotnik left Robotropolis to oversee the destruction of a Freedom Fighter cell operating up north, leaving Snively in charge of the city. While Robotnik was gone, Snively had managed to coerce Sonic into helping him attack Knothole after Sonic had been affected by a memory-scrambling device. However, Sonic was later brought back to his senses and thwarted Snively's plan, even using using the memory scrambler on him as a joke on Robotnik. Under the device's influence, Snively attacked Robotnik when he returned home, but soon came to his senses and told the doctor that he had found Knothole. Unfortunately for him, Sonic and Uncle Chuck had altered the coordinates in Robotnik's computer, which now stated that Knothole was in the Dark Swamp. A confused Snively led Robotnik on a wild goose chase through the swamp for some time as the dictator became increasingly agitated by the bugs infesting the area.

"Blast to the Past"[]

SatAM RobotnikNormalArm

Robotnik's history was slightly altered when Sonic and Sally used the Time Stones to travel back in time in an attempt to prevent the doctor's coup. However, they arrived too late, and Robotnik managed to seize power in Mobotropolis, like in the original timeline. However, when he came to capture the King, he met resistance from Sir Charles, who neutralized his SWATbots. He also met the present-day Sonic for the first time, who took present-day Sally and escaped with her. Despite this, Robotnik managed to imprison almost the entire population of Mobotropolis and capture the King.

Robotnik then sent the Destroyer out to spread pollution and destroy nature, eventually turning Mobotropolis into Robotropolis. Snively later informed him that two prisoners had escaped from their cells, among them a blue hedgehog. Although curious, Robotnik insisted that he should not worry about it. Together with Snively, he went on to roboticize young Bunnie, only for the Roboticizer to go offline for two hours. While waiting for the Roboticizer to come back online, Robotnik banished King Acorn to the Void. Later, a Tech-Bot showed him a dragon that had destroyed many SWATbots and Hover Units before getting caught. Furious by the dragon's resistance, Robotnik ordered that all dragons had to be roboticized and have their powers harnessed. He also promised to build a special Roboticizer just for the dragons.

BTTPP213

Afterward, Robotnik returned to his headquarters, where he noticed that Snively had lost most of his hair. There, Snively showed Robotnik that Sonic was attacking the Destroyer with Sally. Upon hearing Sonic's name, Robotnik remembered that Sonic was Sir Charles's nephew. He thus ordered Sonic to be captured alive. After Sonic, Sally and Sabina brought the Destroyer down, Robotnik wondered what Sonic was doing so far from home. As Robotnik took his anger out on Snively though, the Roboticizer was brought back online. Robotnik thus went to the Roboticizer, where the people were lined up to be roboticized, the first among them being Sir Charles, young Sonic, young Sally and the other future Freedom Fighters. There, Robotnik loudly announced that Sir Charles was the real inventor of the Roboticizer. After he roboticized Charles however, Sonic appeared and distracted both Robotnik and his robots. As Sally then began evacuating the children, Robotnik managed to catch present-day Sonic. However, Sonic soon broke free and knocked Robotnik into the Roboticizer's rays. With his left arm rendered robotic, the angry doctor ordered the escapees to be pursued. Spearheading a great army, Robotnik eventually surrounded Sonic and Sally in a building on the outskirts of Robotropolis. However, the heroes fled using the Time Stones, leaving Robotnik without prisoners to catch.

"Dulcy"[]

RISEANDSWINEROBUTTNIK

After being woken up in the middle of the night by Snively, Robotnik was alerted to Sonic's presence in Robotropolis and ordered the deployment of several Mega Muck Units, which managed to immobilize the hedgehog. Just as several SWATbots moved in to capture Sonic, Dulcy the Dragon arrived and used her ice breath to freeze the robots in place before freeing Sonic and flying off with him.

Having previously thought he had roboticized all of Mobius' dragons, Robotnik used a mind probe to glean information from one of his robo-dragons, learning of the existence of Dragon's Nest, the place where dragons went to lay their eggs. He and Snively then boarded his command ship and ventured out on a mission to put an end to the dragons' civilization. After arriving in Deep Canyon, Robotnik and Snively found a Mother Dragon and caught her. Returning to Robotropolis, Robotnik began to interrogate the encaged Mother Dragon. The dragon told Robotnik that he now had all the dragons, but the doctor knew that she was lying. Since she did not want to tell him anything however, Robotnik ordered her to be sent to the dragon Roboticizer.

Dulcy Episode 191

When Robotnik later flew back to Deep Canyon, he detected Dulcy, Sonic and Sally, who were flying around with the Mother Dragon's egg. Robotnik tried to catch them, but the heroes ultimately escaped him. As such, Robotnik returned to Robotropolis, and, together with SWATbots and Mega Muck Units, personally began escorting the Mother Dragon to the Roboticizer. He also expected that the Freedom Fighters would try and stop him, so he had special forces awaiting his command. However, Sonic and his friends saw through Robotnik's tactics and neutralized all his support. Robotnik's escort was subsequently destroyed and glued together with Mega Muck from the Mega Muck Units, while the heroes saved the Mother Dragon.

"The Void"[]

Following a meeting with his commanders regarding his upcoming Doomsday Project, Robotnik was informed by Snively that Void activity had been detected out in the Great Unknown. Concerned that his old colleague Naugus might be returning, Robotnik led an investigation into the area. While there, they discovered that Sonic was also in the area and Robotnik feared that the hedgehog might be working with Naugus. When a Void portal opened nearby, the doctor had his fleet of hover-pods fire a sweep of lasers to force Sonic into the portal.

Unable to seal the portal, Robotnik's forces waited on standby, ready to fire on anything that might emerge from the portal. Sonic soon emerged from the Void, bringing with him what appeared to be the exiled King Acorn. However, it soon turned out that it was not the King that Sonic had brought through, but Naugus in disguise. The sinister wizard shed his disguise and began weaving his magic upon Robotnik, turning the dictator's head into that of various animals. Robotnik pleaded with Naugus that he had never betrayed him, insisting that the wizard's banishment had been an accident, with Snively sitting back and laughing all the while Naugus continued to torment the doctor. To Robotnik's relief, however, it turned out that Naugus had spent so long in the Void that he could no longer survive outside of it as the wizard's body slowly began to turn to crystal. With other option but to return to the Void, Naugus vanished through the portal once more, swearing to Robotnik that he would have his revenge one day.

"Cry of the Wolf"[]

WolfSATAM01

While admiring the holographic blueprints of his Doomsday Machine, Robotnik was informed by Snively that the Doomsday Pod prototype had been damaged by the Wolf Pack in the Great Unknown. As such, Robotnik sent Snively to repair it. Robotnik later contacted Snively and found out that the Doomsday Pod would be repaired soon. He also told him to look for the Wolf Pack and eliminate them. Robotnik soon after contacted Snively again and learned that he had lost the Wolf Pack's trail. As such, Robotnik watched Snively's recordings. After studying the canyon walls, Robotnik told Snively to start looking for entrances to the Wolf Pack's caves in the canyon walls.

"Drood Henge"[]

While studying an ancient book regarding the region known as Drood Henge, Robotnik discovered the location where the legendary Deep Power Stones were supposedly buried. To supervise the excavations, Robotnik sent Snively and his SWATbots. After Robotnik was about to finish translating the text in the book, he learned from Snively that he had found one of the scrolls. When Snively later contacted him again, Robotnik noticed that Snively was all dirty. As it turned out, Sonic and Tails attacked last night and shut down the generator, but Snively had managed to restore it and find the second scroll. Upon hearing this, Robotnik decided to go to Drood Henge himself to supervise the first Deep Power Stone's excavation.

Shortly after his arrival, one of the two Deep Power Stones was found, which Robotnik quickly claimed for himself. Feeling that Sonic and his friends would be coming soon, Robotnik deployed Surveillance Orbs all over Drood Henge. Eventually, he found Tails, who was running up to Sonic with a scroll. The blue hedgehog then dug up a fake Deep Power Stone. Not knowing any better however, Robotnik believed that Sonic had found the real second stone. Afterward, Sonic lured Robotnik and his forces into the Great Unknown. There, he destroyed the fake Deep Power Stone. Believing that the real stone had been destroyed, Robotnik was horrified. Nevertheless, he decided to capture Sonic, but the hedgehog was soon saved by Dulcy, Sally and Tails, leaving Robotnik to scream in frustration.

"Spyhog"[]

As construction on the Doomsday Machine neared completion, Robotnik personally supervised its final stages. He then gave Snively the order to deliver the fuel for the Doomsday machine. When the fuel tanker convoy was attacked by the Knothole Freedom Fighters however, Robotnik pointed out to Snively that Sonic was distracting most of the guards. As such, the doctor told him to have the guards return to protecting the convoy. The Freedom Fighters, however, managed to escape in the end.

Seeing that this was the fourth time in four weeks that the Freedom Fighters had ruined his plans, Robotnik began to suspect that someone was spying on his every move. As such, Robotnik constructed special masks which he and Snively wore after he returned to Robotropolis. Thanks to these masks, they were able to speak freely without anyone hearing them. Soon after, a Tech-Bot found an eavesdropping bug in the ventilation shaft. Using this to his advantage, Robotnik decided to damage the bug instead of destroying it, because then the spy would return to the same place to set up a new one. At one point, Snively grabbed Antoine, whom he mistook for the spy. After Sonic saved Antoine though, Robotnik contacted Snively and threatened him for letting Antoine get away, but he changed his attitude when he saw that the real spy had been caught - Sir Charles Hedgehog.

Robotnik interrogating Chuck

Intrigued that one of his roboticized slaves was working against him, Robotnik returned to Robotropolis to interrogate Charles and learn about the location of Knothole from him. Knowing that Charles would not speak willingly, the doctor plugged him into a machine that could pull information out of his mind. However, the procedure was interrupted by Sonic, who rescued Charles and neutralized all the robots in the room by creating a whirlwind. In response to Sonic's attack, Robotnik evacuated to the lower floor.

"The Doomsday Project"[]

Despite the Freedom Fighters' attempts to interfere with the project, the Doomsday Machine was completed, bringing Robotnik to the verge of total domination of Mobius. With the project's activation, Doomsday Pods were deployed via a series of tunnels all over the planet, carrying out wholesale destruction everywhere they went. The united Freedom Fighter groups subsequently launched an attack on the Doomsday Machine, with those in the sky dropping dummies in parachutes that served as diversions. Robotnik, however, saw through this strategy, and saw Sonic, Sally, Bunnie and Antoine get inside the Doomsday Machine. Rather than alert security, Robotnik ordered Snively to wait and let them explore the fortress.

The Doomsday Project 170

After the heroes reached the Doomsday Pod factory and went their separate ways, Robotnik decided to face Sonic personally. When the hedgehog tried to blow up the Doomsday Machine's generator, Robotnik flew in and explained that the generator was protected by diamond glass, meaning that the generator was invulnerable to conventional demolition. Robotnik then dropped Sonic into a special Roboticizer chamber and began the roboticization procedure. Although, Sonic managed to neutralize the roboticization ray with a Power Ring, it was not enough. However, when Sonic added two more Power Rings to the mix, the Roboticizer overloaded and the capsule in which Sonic had been trapped in flew out of the Doomsday Machine. Defeated, Robotnik withdrew to the command center and decided to wait.

Sometime later, Snively informed Robotnik that Sonic and Sally had appeared next to the generator and had both Deep Power Stones. Although Robotnik sent his SWATbots to stop them and retrieve the stones, he was too late. Strengthened by the power of the Deep Power Stones, Sonic and Sally began to destroy the Doomsday Machine. As such, Robotnik decided to flee in his hovercraft, leaving Snively behind. As he fled though, Robotnik found himself caught within the field of power given off by the Deep Power Stones. He began seething with rage, cursing Sonic and ranting over how much he hated the heroic hedgehog. As Sonic and Sally wiped the Doomsday Machine off the face of Mobius, Robotnik disappeared along with it and was presumed dead. With Robotnik gone, the Freedom Fighters celebrated their victory, thinking that Mobius was finally free.

Appearance[]

This incarnation of Robotnik differs significantly from his original video game counterpart. He is a large man with a bald, bullet-shaped cranium, black eyes with red irises and a long-haired orange moustache. He has a wide, bloated torso, thick arms and short, thick legs. He does not have regular human ears, instead sporting a pair of mechanical stubs that function as ears.

Robotnik's attire consists of a red and black jumpsuit with a yellow belt and harness, large red shoulder pads, a yellow cape, grey leggings and black boots with red highlights. His suit has no sleeves for his arms; the right arm is exposed with a black band wrapped around it and wears a grey glove over the hand. His left arm once looked like this too, before it was roboticized in an accident.

Personality[]

Sonic Racer 252

This incarnation of Dr. Robotnik is somewhat more sadistic than his videogame counterpart. He takes great delight in the suffering of others and his schemes tend to be more vicious. His desire to rule the world was sparked by a belief that Mobius was a world in the grip of constant chaos; a chaos caused by continuous struggles between races and the flaws of free will. It was Robotnik's intention to bring about order to Mobius by eliminating the chaotic element of free will, by turning the world into a well-oiled machine. He is convinced that robots and machines are inherently superior to organics and has no regard for organic life in any form. As cold-hearted and cruel as he is, Robotnik is still prone to throwing childish tantrums when his plans are ruined by Sonic. He often takes his frustrations out on his cowardly nephew Snively, who although is related by blood, Robotnik cares little to nothing for.

Abilities[]

  • Genius Intellect - Robotnik has a staggering IQ of over 300. He is a brilliant scientist and military tactician with a predisposition toward treachery, having rose to power by betraying everyone around him. He is highly inventive; if Robotnik can imagine it, he can probably build it.
  • Mechanically Augmented Strength - During his rise to power, Dr. Robotnik suffered an accident involving the Roboticizer. The accident resulted in his left arm and some of his innards being transformed into machinery. Though an annoyance at the time, Robotnik found his semi-roboticized body to be quite beneficial, with his strength being enhanced and various gadgets installed into his arm.
  • Laser Blaster - Robotnik's mechanical arm also carries a small, concealed laser weapon.
  • Jet Boots - Robotnik wears jet boots that allow him to fly short distances.
  • Enhanced Senses - Robotnik's eyes and ears are cybernetic and he has been shown emitting red lights from his eyes in the dark. It is unknown when or why Robotnik received these enhancements, but most likely he had been injured in some manner during the Great War.
