Doctor Eggman - also known as Doctor Robotnik - is the main antagonist of the anime OVA Sonic the Hedgehog. He is a human scientist who resides in the Land of Darkness, the inner dimension of the planet Freedom. Seeking recognition and worship for his genius, Eggman has made it his mission to conquer the world and force its inhabitants to acknowledge his brilliance. Standing in his way is Sonic the Hedgehog, whom the doctor has sworn to destroy.
History[]
Prior to the OVA's events, Dr. Eggman was already infamous, having made a number of attempts to conquer Freedom. Of course, these attempts were all thwarted by Sonic. For his latest scheme, he created the Hyper Metal Sonic, a robotic duplicate of his arch-nemesis. This robot would be faster and stronger than Sonic in every way, but in order to complete it, Eggman required Sonic's life data. That way, Metal Sonic would understand how Sonic thought and could anticipate his moves.
In order to obtain Sonic's bio-data, Eggman devised a convoluted scheme to lure the hedgehog to his home city of Eggmanland. He sabotaged the Egg Generator, the central power supply for the city, overloading it and setting it to explode. He then ventured to the Land of the Sky where he took the President of South Island and his daughter Sara hostage, sending the presidential aide Old Man Owl to deliver a summons to Sonic. When Sonic and Tails arrived at the Presidential House, Dr. Eggman greeted them before telling them a fabricated story of how Black Eggman - a version of himself from another dimension - invaded and conquered Eggmanland and set the Egg Generator to overload. If the Egg Generator wasn't shut down by dawn the next day, the resulting explosion would destroy the entire planet. Though Sonic (rightfully) believed that Eggman was lying, he ultimately agreed to help, not wanting to risk the fate of the world on such a possibility.
Dr. Eggman provided Sonic and Tails with a navigation device that would help them reach Eggmanland and the heroes were off. Meanwhile, the doctor stayed at the Presidential House and played video games with Sara until she demanded to go out. At that time, the Black Eggman battle mech crashed into the President's office and Eggman and Sara departed within it. They headed into the Land of Darkness and intercepted Sonic and Tails in the Ancient Relics where they engaged in an epic battle. As far as Sonic and Tails knew, the Black Eggman was just as Dr. Eggman had claimed it to be, having no idea that their arch-enemy was controlling it. During the battle, Sonic and Tails were overpowered and faced certain death until the timely arrival of their friend Knuckles, who was able to turn the tide. In the end, Black Eggman was destroyed and the heroes continued on their way to Eggmanland. Eggman and Sara survived the mech's destruction and the doctor declared that Sonic would soon have to fight something far worse than Black Eggman.
Sonic, Tails and Knuckles soon arrived at Eggmanland and ventured to the city's heart where the Egg Generator was located. Together, they managed to shut down the generator, but upon doing so, they activated a trap that caught Sonic. While it appeared that Sonic was being electrocuted, he was actually having his bio-data extracted, which was then transferred to Hyper Metal Sonic. Once the process was finished, the Egg Generator collapsed and a bright sphere of energy appeared in its place. After a minute, the sphere vanished, revealing Metal Sonic to the heroes. As the trio stood stunned at the sight of Metal Sonic, they heard Dr. Eggman's maniacal laughter echo through the chamber as the wreckage of Black Eggman appeared. The ruined mech was being held up by a group of Eggman's robots, who soon collapsed under its great weight. The mech fell apart and Eggman and Sara soon emerged from the wreckage, with Sara telling Sonic that Black Eggman and the malfunctioning Egg Generator were all part of the doctor's evil plan.
Dr. Eggman formerly introduced Sonic and his friends to the Hyper Metal Sonic, gloating over how he was going to use it to kill Sonic and destroy the Land of the Sky. Keeping Sara as his captive, he sicced Metal on Sonic and watched the two battle while piloting his Egg Mobile with Sara at his side. The fight took them beyond the city limits and appeared to end with Sonic's defeat. Dr. Eggman was ecstatic, believing that he was finally rid of Sonic once and for all. He and Sara then followed Metal Sonic to the Land of the Sky where they observed the robot attacking several settlements, causing widespread destruction and terrorizing the population. Eggman also decided to get himself a new suit and a wedding dress for Sara, intent on marrying her once Metal's mission was completed. Though Sara loved the dress, she was disgusted by the idea of marrying Eggman.
Later, Eggman and Sara would follow Metal Sonic to the Northern Glacier which held the continents of the Land of the Sky together. Destroying the glacier would cause the continents to be thrown into space by the planet's rotation and annihilated. When they arrived above the glacier, they were shocked to find that Sonic was still alive and was once again fighting Metal. After Metal was sent crashing into the Egg Mobile, Sara fell out of the craft and would have been killed had she not been caught by Knuckles. Tails then appeared in the Tornado and an infuriated Eggman fired on the bi-plane with rabbit and turtle missiles. The rabbit missile succeeded in bringing down the Tornado, but the turtle missile was moving slowly, leaving Eggman to bitterly regret his design choices.
Eggman then tried to kidnap Sara again, only to fail. Later, as Sonic and Tails tried to rescue the President and Old Man Owl from their crashed ship, Eggman managed to destroy the navigator on Tails' wrist, which Tails was using to hack Metal Sonic. Eggman then commanded Metal Sonic to attack the real Sonic. However, Metal Sonic was eventually destroyed, and the President and Old Man Owl were saved, leaving Eggman's plan in ruins. However, Eggman still held a backup of Sonic's data on disc and appeared before the heroes again to gloat, promising to return with a stronger Metal Sonic. In the middle of his gloating, however, the doctor's turtle missile appeared again, grabbing the data disc in its mouth before detonating and destroying it. As Sonic started chasing Knuckles to get back at him for getting knocked on the head, the rest of the group followed them from behind in the Egg Mobile while Eggman was piloting it.
Appearance[]
Dr. Eggman's appearance in the OVA is identical to that of his Classic era appearance in the video games. He is a human with a round head with a huge moustache, a large, round body, thick arms and long legs. He has pince-nez glasses with blue tinted lenses. When his eyes are visible behind his glasses, they are shown to be white with black pupils. He wears a red jacket with golden wrist buttons on each and he has a small yellow cape with a triangular collar that stretches down to the edge of his pants in the front. He is also seen to have black, form-fitting one-piece boots with two buttons in front.
Eggman is also shown to wear a wedding outfit in the latter half of the OVA. It is bright cyan coloured wedding apparel with a large purple bow tie, yellow buttons on the wrists and one on the jacket, a white shirt and a black cape which goes behind his back, similar to his traditional yellow cape.
Personality[]
Dr. Eggman is an egotistical, childish, and selfish man, who is seeking to destroy the Land of the Sky and does everything to get rid of Sonic and his friends. He's usually left behind while his creations are doing his dirty jobs, but even he himself is able to arrive to the event when it is important in terms of his goal. He gets excited when his plans are starting to go very well. However, he gets mad at everyone who tries to get in his way and he gets disappointed when he sees the design failures on his creations. He is also willing to please Sara, whom he is in love with and wants to become his queen. He showers her with many lavish and expensive gifts, such as a wedding dress.
