Doctor Ivo Robotnik - more commonly known as Doctor Eggman - is a brilliant yet evil scientist who serves as the main antagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog video games and other related media. With an IQ of 300 and an affinity for inventing robots and other machines, Eggman regards himself as the greatest scientist in the world. He is determined to prove his genius to everyone by defeating his nemesis Sonic and conquering the world, establishing his own technological utopia called Eggmanland. Over the years, he has created countless robot minions such as the Badniks, the E-Series and more, as well as creating fleets of massive airships and spaceships and various doomsday devices. Despite his intellect and vast resources, Eggman's schemes are always thwarted by Sonic and his friends. The doctor also has a very childish personality and is prone to throwing temper tantrums whenever things don't go his way. But no matter how often his plans fail, no matter how humiliating the defeat, Dr. Eggman never, EVER gives up and will never stop until the Eggman Empire rules over all with him sitting on the world's throne.

Sonic the Hedgehog[]
Dr. Eggman would begin his quest to build the Eggman Empire by establishing his Scrap Brain factory on South Island. Having learned that the Chaos Emeralds were hidden somewhere on the island, Eggman began abducting the animal inhabitants of the island and turning them into Badniks, an army of vicious robots programmed to obey his every command.
Eggman sent his Badnik forces all across the island in search of the mystical Chaos Emeralds, but their work was impeded by a rebellious, speedy blue hedgehog calling himself Sonic, who destroyed the doctor's machines and freed the animals that were trapped inside. Sonic eventually made his way to Scrap Brain where he confronted the doctor, defeating him and destroying his factory.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)[]
Despite his previous setback, Eggman was not yet finished with South Island. Having established backup facilities around the island, the doctor resumed his search for the Chaos Emeralds, building new, stronger Super Badniks to find them and to destroy Sonic should the hedgehog interfere again.
To insure against Sonic, Dr. Eggman abducted Sonic's best friend Miles "Tails" Prower, a young two-tailed fox. Eggman held Tails for ransom, demanding that Sonic deliver the Chaos Emeralds to his Crystal Egg facility. Sonic complied, but Eggman's Badniks continued hunting him down. Eventually, Sonic made it to the Scrambled Egg where he confronted the Silver Sonic, a robotic replica of himself. Sonic managed to destroy his mechanical doppelganger and acquire all of the Chaos Emeralds, gaining access to the Crystal Egg where Eggman had prepared his final trap. Despite his preparations, Eggman was unable to crush Sonic or obtain the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic destroyed the doctor's machine and rescued Tails while Eggman fled from South Island.
Sonic CD[]
Having studied the properties of the other-dimensional planetoid known as Little Planet, Dr. Eggman sought the ultimate power: control over time itself. When Little Planet appeared over Never Lake at the end of the year, Eggman established a base there and eventually his machinery spread to cover the entire surface of the planet. With Little Planet in a constant state of temporal flux and being chained to the Earth, the doctor had all the time he needed to locate the mystical Time Stones.
Sonic the Hedgehog and Amy Rose arrived at Never Lake one day to discover Little Planet terraformed by Eggman's machinery. Running up the giant chain to the celestial dwarf, Sonic arrived to find that the machinery he had seen earlier was no longer present. This was due to the Time Stones distorting the natural flow of time on Little Planet, and as Sonic explored, he found himself shifting into different time zones: the distant past when Little Planet was abundant in plant life, a dystopian future where Eggman had allowed his empire to fall into disrepair, and a potential paradise future where nature and technology seemed to mesh in harmony.
Shortly after arriving on Little Planet, Amy was abducted by Metal Sonic, Eggman's latest and greatest attempt at creating a Sonic doppelganger. Sonic dashed all over the tiny world, smashing all of Eggman's Badniks and machines while he searched for both Amy and the Time Stones. Eventually, Sonic would collect all seven stones, securing the Little Planet's future. He then took on Metal Sonic in a deadly race in which Eggman was scorching the track behind them. Fortunately, Sonic's determination and guile saw him reach the finish line first and Metal Sonic was trashed.
After rescuing Amy, Sonic would then confront Dr. Eggman in his fortress, destroying his Egg Spinner machine. Unleashing the energy of the Time Stones, Sonic erased all of Eggman's technology across Little Planet, restoring it to its former beauty.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)[]
Dr. Eggman would later travel to West Side Island where he would begin his plans anew, abducting the native animals and turning them into his Badnik slaves. With his new army, Eggman conquered the island and seized control of all of its resources, using them to construct his latest creation: the Death Egg.
The Death Egg was to be Eggman's ultimate weapon, an orbital battle station carrying enough firepower to destroy entire landmasses and force the world into submission. But to bring the Death Egg to full power, Eggman would need the Chaos Emeralds. Unfortunately for Eggman, Sonic and Tails had travelled to West Side Island and would find the emeralds before he could.
After striking at Eggman's base in Metropolis, Sonic and Tails pursued the doctor as he fled aboard his Wing Fortress. While the Tornado was shot down, Sonic was able to board the vessel and catch up to Eggman on the bridge, destroying its defences. Eggman escaped aboard a shuttle, but Sonic managed to stow away and followed the doctor to the Death Egg. There, he fought against another robot copy of himself - Mecha Sonic - destroying it before finally cornering Eggman. Eggman then revealed his trump card: the Death Egg Robot, a humanoid mecha built in Eggman's own visage. The Death Egg Robot was strong, but Sonic perservered and managed to defeat the killing machine. Sonic and Eggman's fighting had caused damage to the Death Egg's power circuits, resulting in an explosion that caused the floating fortress to fall out of orbit. Sonic was able to escape from the explosion and was caught by Tails in the Tornado while in freefall.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles[]
After falling from orbit, the Death Egg crash-landed on the legendary flying landmass known as Angel Island, the impact forcing the airborne isle to plunge into the ocean. Dr. Eggman immediately went to work trying to repair the Death Egg, summoning Badnik reinforcements from his planetside facilities to bring the equipment he would need. The doctor's activities did not go unnoticed, however, as he was greeted by the island's guardian Knuckles, the last member of the Echidna race.
Having lived alone his entire life until then, Knuckles was extremely naive and was easily fooled by Eggman into believing that the doctor was a force for good in the world. Knowing that Sonic would inevitably show up to interfere with his plans, Eggman told Knuckles that Sonic was a thief who had stolen the Chaos Emeralds from him, tricking the echidna into thinking that the hedgehog would try to steal the Master Emerald that kept Angel Island aloft. Knuckles went about setting traps for Sonic all over the island while Eggman continued working on the Death Egg's repairs.
While Eggman succeeded in repairing the Death Egg, the flying fortress crashed again almost immediately after take-off. Eggman fought against Sonic on the vessel's undercarriage in his Big Arm machine, but the battle ended in defeat for Eggman whilst the Death Egg's engines suffered damage causing it to fall on top of Angel Island's volcano. The satellite remained intact, but it would require a source of unlimited power to get off the ground again, and so Eggman plotted to steal the Master Emerald.
While Sonic and Knuckles were busy fighting each other, Eggman would sneak into the Hidden Palace where the Master Emerald was housed. It was only after seeing Eggman trying to hoist the emerald away on his Egg Mobile that Knuckles realised that he had been tricked, attacking the doctor and trying to stop him. Eggman electrocuted Knuckles and escaped to the Death Egg, installing the Master Emerald into the satellite's power core. Fully powered, the Death Egg took to the skies once more, deploying a squadron of Badniks to kill off Sonic and Knuckles. Knuckles helped Sonic advance through the Sky Sanctuary before the airborne temple collapsed and the hedgehog boarded the colossal fortress.
Aboard the Death Egg, Sonic fought his way through a legion of Badniks as well as the ship's many missile batteries, anti-gravity chambers and electrical traps. The Death Egg suffered heavy damage from its own interior defences. When Sonic finally caught up to Eggman, the doctor manned his most powerful mecha yet, the Great Eggman Robo, and attempted to crush his nemesis once and for all. Sonic proved to be too fast for the enormous death machine, however, and was able to defeat it. As the mecha crashed into the Death Egg's already-damaged superstructure, Eggman fled aboard a well-armed ship, taking the Master Emerald with him.
Having collected all seven Chaos Emeralds, Sonic transformed into Super Sonic and pursued Dr. Eggman through the upper atmosphere, dodging missiles and fragments of stellar debris. Super Sonic soon caught up to Eggman and destroyed his ship by luring its homing missiles back towards it. After critically damaging the mech-suit that emerged from the shuttle, Super Sonic grabbed the Master Emerald from Eggman, returning it to Angel Island. With the Death Egg destroyed and the Master Emerald lost, Eggman would have to begin his plans anew.
Sonic Chaos[]
While Sonic and Tails were away on an adventure in another part of the world, Dr. Eggman returned to South Island, having detected the presence of the Chaos Emeralds there. Finding the emeralds in a frozen cave, Eggman took one of them, but the others then disappeared, scattering to different parts of the island.
With the red Chaos Emerald in his possession, Eggman began conducting experiments with it, trying to develop weapons of mass destruction based on Chaos energy. However, a catastrophic side effect of these experiments was an unusual increase in seismic activity that threatened to make South Island sink into the sea.
Sonic and Tails would return to the island to find it in complete disarray, with various zones left in ruin and Badniks running amok in search of the other Chaos Emeralds. The two heroes would scour the island until recovering the magical gems, but one was still in Eggman's possession. Sonic travelled to Eggman's Electric Egg base where he confronted the doctor once again, destroying his contraptions and taking back the red emerald. With the Chaos Emeralds out of Eggman's grasp, South Island stabilized once more.
Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble[]
After managing to secure the Chaos Emeralds, Dr. Eggman began experimenting with the stones' tremendous energy to develop new destructive weapons with which to conquer the world. However, one of the doctor's weapon tests goes awry and causes the emeralds to scatter once more. Eggman recovers one of the emeralds, but decides to enlist outside help to find the others before Sonic and Tails can.
Eggman approaches Knuckles the Echidna once more, tricking him into believing that Sonic and Tails are out to steal the Chaos Emeralds and abuse their power. The gullible Knuckles believes Eggman's lies and agrees to help him, so the doctor provides the echidna with weapons and robots to use to combat Sonic. However, a third party is also seeking the emeralds: a conniving mercenary known as Fang the Sniper. Fang is unaware of the Chaos Emeralds' true power, but is convinced that he can sell them to the highest bidder and become rich.
Even with Knuckles, Fang and an army of Badniks to contend with, Sonic and Tails succeed in finding the Chaos Emeralds. They then confront Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic within the Atomic Destroyer, Eggman's weapons plant, destroying the facility and retrieving the last emerald.
Knuckles' Chaotix[]
After a mysterious island arises fom the southern sea, Dr. Eggman investigates this new landmass and discovers a giant golden ring. Inscribed on the interior of the ring is the ancient language of the lost Echidna race. From the inscription, Eggman learns of the existence of the six Chaos Rings: relics of great power similar to Angel Island's own Master Emerald. Intrigued, Eggman sets up shop on the island to conduct research on the ring. True to his childish nature, he builds his new base in the form of an amusement park, dubbing it "Carnival Island."
While Eggman carries out his experiments with the giant ring, Carnival Island attracts some uninvited guests in the form of Knuckles the Echidna and four newcomers: Espio the Chameleon, Vector the Crocodile, Mighty the Armadillo and Charmy Bee. While each have come to the island for different reasons, they soon fall victim to Dr. Eggman's traps and must work together to escape confinement.
With the intruders running loose on the island, Eggman dispatches his new army of Badniks powered by Dark Rings, artificial versions of the Chaos Rings. Chief among the doctor's robot forces is Metal Sonic, who periodically attacks Knuckles and the Chaotix Crew. Knuckles and the gang manage to access the bizarre dimension beyond the giant rings where they collect the Chaos Rings, keeping them out of Eggman's clutches. After a final battle against Dr. Eggman and a transformed Metal Sonic, the heroes destroy Eggman's base before parting ways.
Sonic 3D Blast[]
After detecting Chaos energy signatures coming from an isolated island, Dr. Eggman investigates the place where he finds a giant ring similar to the one he had discovered on Carnival Island. Like that giant ring, this one served as a portal to another dimension where the birds known as Flickies originate from. After establishing a new base on Flicky Island, Eggman built a machine that would allow him to generate a dimension ring and lure the Flickies into his grasp. Once the Flickies were captured, they would be turned into Badniks and put to work searching the island for the Chaos Emeralds.
Before long, Eggman's scheme would be impeded by his old nemesis Sonic. Sonic dashed about the island destroying every last Badnik he encountered, and even managed to secure the Chaos Emeralds before Eggman could find them. When the hedgehog arrived at his base, Eggman confronted him personally, but Sonic destroyed the doctor's final weapon and freed Flicky Island from his control.
Sonic Adventure[]
After discovering the legendary ruins left behind by the lost Echidna people, Dr. Eggman studied a series of stone tablets that revealed the existence of an ancient being known as Chaos. Described by the Echidnas' writings as a "god of destruction", Chaos was responsible for almost completely wiping out the Echidna race before it had been magically sealed within the Master Emerald. Believing that Chaos could be controlled by baiting it with the Chaos Emeralds, Dr. Eggman travelled to Angel Island aboard his latest flying battleship, the Egg Carrier.
Upon reaching Angel Island's airspace, Eggman opened fire on the Master Emerald shrine, shattering the Master Emerald to pieces and freeing Chaos. With the Master Emerald shattered, Angel Island fell out of the sky and crashed into the ocean below, just off the coast of the United Federation. Eggman then went about the task of locating the seven Chaos Emeralds, intending to feed them to Chaos to make the creature invincible. With Chaos on his side, the doctor planned to destroy the city of Station Square and build his ideal utopia, Eggmanland, upon its ruins.
Eggman found the first Chaos Emerald in the possession of his old enemies Sonic and Tails. He ambushed the pair outside of Tails' workshop in the Mystic Ruins, attacking in his Egg Hornet machine. Though Eggman lost the battle, he won the prize by using a mechanical claw that extended from his Egg Mobile, pinching the emerald out of Tails' hands and then calling upon Chaos to come devour the stone. Upon consuming the emerald, Chaos' form changed and the creature became stronger. Eggman then left the scene of the battle, apparently to find more Chaos Emeralds. However, he was merely waiting for Sonic and Tails to do the work for him, monitoring their activities and ready to strike once they had more emeralds for him to snatch.
Eggman would obtain a second emerald after ambushing Sonic and Tails as they walked out of Casinopolis in Station Square. He then entered the Station Square Grand Hotel where he fed the gem to Chaos, but Knuckles the Echidna had followed him inside. Eggman pitted Chaos against Knuckles, but the creature lost the battle. However, Eggman was unconcerned and he told Knuckles that Sonic was looking for the Master Emerald shards. This was a lie, of course, but Eggman believed that pitting Sonic and Knuckles against each other would allow him to obtain another emerald. Knuckles fell for this trick and later followed Sonic to the Mystic Ruins, with Eggman not far behind.
Sure enough, Sonic had found two more emeralds by this time, but Knuckles believed that the hedgehog was carrying a piece of the Master Emerald and challenged him for it. When the two rivals came to blows, Sonic dropped both the Chaos Emeralds that were on him and Eggman swooped in to claim them. He then summoned Chaos once more and fed the gems to him, causing the elemental beast to transform again. Eggman then fled aboard the Egg Carrier, though Sonic and Tails pursued the doctor aboard their modified plane, the Tornado. The little plane was no match for the might of the Egg Carrier and was shot down. Sonic and Tails both survived, but were separated for the time being.
With just three Chaos Emeralds left to find, Eggman's plan was nearing fruition. While collecting more animals to use as organic batteries for his Badniks, the doctor captured a family of three Flicky birds, one of which was carrying a pendant containing one of the emeralds. This bird escaped from the Egg Carrier as it was flying over Station Square, crashing into Amy Rose while she was out shopping. Eggman sent his E-Series robot E-100 Alpha - aka Zero - to retrieve the Flicky and the Chaos Emerald. Meanwhile, the two Flickies that were still in Eggman's custody were installed into two new E-100 models: E-101 Beta and E-102 Gamma.
Later on, the E-100 robots were sent out to find a mutated frog which had apparently swallowed not only a Chaos Emerald, but also Chaos' tail. Zero would also return to the Egg Carrier after having captured Amy and the Flicky she was protecting. When Gamma returned to the ship with Froggy, Eggman congratulated him and sent him to the ship's brig to take the bird from Amy. During this time, Gamma began to gain a sense of self-awareness after witnessing Beta being modified and questioning Amy on why she was protecting the Flicky. In its confusion, Gamma opened Amy's cell and told her to escape. Eggman was unaware that Gamma was malfunctioning and likely assumed Amy had tricked the robot into releasing her, but the doctor was occupied with defending the Egg Carrier when Sonic and Tails attacked again in their new Tornado-2 plane.
After the Tornado-2 crash-landed on the Egg Carrier's flight deck, Eggman transformed the ship into its battle-mode, forcing Sonic and Tails to make their way through the treacherous Sky Deck to reach him. Soon, Sonic, Tails and Amy would reach the main deck. Eggman snatched the Flicky from Amy's grasp, taking the Chaos Emerald it carried before discarding the bird. Eggman then summoned Gamma and ordered him to destroy Sonic and his friends before heading to the rear of the ship to give the emerald to Chaos. The doctor did not witness Gamma's defeat or subsequent betrayal.
Due to the damage caused by Sonic on the Sky Deck, the Egg Carrier's engines began failing and the ship lost altitude. Amy, Tails and Gamma fled from the falling airship while Sonic confronted Eggman and Chaos at the rear of the ship. Eggman had fed Chaos the emerald taken from the bird as well as Froggy, transforming the creature into Chaos-6 and restoring his tail. Big the Cat, who had stowed away aboard the Egg Carrier before its last takeoff, stepped in to fish Froggy out of Chaos' liquid body before leaving Sonic to defeat the creature. Using a series of freezing weapons deployed by Eggman, Sonic froze Chaos solid and shattered it. His plans ruined again, Eggman made his escape on his Egg Mobile, but Sonic leapt after him.
While descending to the ground, Eggman shook Sonic off the Egg Mobile, sending the hedgehog falling into the Mystic Ruins. Eggman, however, went hurtling down into Station Square. Enraged, he decided that he could still destroy Station Square without Chaos and activated a missile silo just off the shore. The nuclear missile fired and came down in the centre of the city, but did not detonate. Furious, Eggman flew toward the missile, intent on setting it off himself even though doing so would mean his own death. However, Tails beat Eggman to the missile and disarmed it, saving the city. Eggman then tried to kill Tails using his Egg Walker mecha, but Tails defeated it and Eggman was forced to retreat.
The doctor returned to his Final Egg base in the Mystic Ruins, but as he flew over the jungle, he was spotted by Sonic. Sonic followed Eggman and infiltrated the base, smashing through all of the robots and traps in his way before finally confronting the doctor in a massive hangar. Eggman fought Sonic from the cockpit of his Egg Viper machine, but even this mecha wasn't enough to stop him. After taking multiple hits, the Egg Viper crashed into the heart of the base, though Eggman had survived once again.
As Eggman traversed the jungle following the loss of the Final Egg, he encountered Chaos, seeing that it had survived its last battle against Sonic. Fueled by pure rage, Chaos attacked Eggman, who fled towards Angel Island, which was still fallen even after Knuckles had restored the Master Emerald. Eggman tried to warn Knuckles about Chaos, but the creature attacked them both, rendering them unconscious. The six Chaos Emeralds that Chaos had consumed previously had been gathered up by Knuckles when the Egg Carrier fell and were located by the Master Emerald altar. Chaos took the gems and fled, seeking out the last one, which was installed aboard the Tornado-2. The plane had been taken by Big when he and Froggy fled from the Egg Carrier and was lying wrecked in the jungle. Chaos got to the last emerald just before Sonic could, then disappeared.
With all seven Chaos Emeralds, Chaos transformed into its ultimate state: Perfect Chaos. Taking control of the ocean itself, Perfect Chaos flooded Station Square, killing an unknown number of people and leaving the city in ruins. Dr. Eggman had returned to what remained of his base and launched the Egg Carrier 2, a backup of the original Carrier, intent on destroying Chaos. However, the ship's weapons had no effect on Chaos and the monster shot the vessel out of the sky with a massive energy blast. Eggman himself was sent flying by the explosion, but he returned to the scene of his ship's fall in time to witness Sonic use the positive energies of the Chaos Emeralds to turn into Super Sonic and neutralize Chaos' negative aura. Eggman silently acknowledged Sonic's victory before leaving the devastated city.
Sonic Adventure 2[]
While hacking into the United Federation's mainframe, Dr. Eggman accessed a top secret government file that contained the research diary of his late grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik. The diary made mention of a military superweapon labelled "Project: Shadow" that Gerald had been working on, but the project had been shut down out of fear that it would fall into the hands of an aggressive foreign power. Enamoured by the idea of using his grandfather's work to achieve his goal of world domination, Dr. Eggman raided Prison Island, the G.U.N. facility where Project: Shadow was stored.
After blasting his way through scores of G.U.N. guard robots in his Egg Walker II, the doctor reached the primary vault where Project: Shadow was kept. Using a Chaos Emerald he had procured, Eggman activated the main security console and opened the cryogenic capsule containing the weapon, but was shocked to find that Shadow was, in fact, a living organism, and a hedgehog, no less. At first, Eggman mistook Shadow for his nemesis Sonic, but Shadow solemnly introduced himself and demonstrated his power by destroying a G.U.N. assault mech. Shadow then departed the base, telling Eggman that he would grant the doctor a wish if he brought more Chaos Emeralds to him on the Space Colony ARK.
Eggman would later return to his pyramid base in the Sand Ocean, tuning in to a news broadcast announcing that the federal reserve bank in Central City had been robbed. The news anchor reported that the suspect had been identified as Sonic the Hedgehog and had stolen the Chaos Emerald stored in the bank's vault, but Eggman realised that it must have been Shadow.
Later, after having built a space teleporter, Eggman transported to the ARK, the space colony designed by his grandfather Prof. Gerald which had been shut down 50 years ago. Shadow was waiting for him in the control room and showed the doctor the Eclipse Cannon, a weapon of mass destruction that utilised Chaos energy. Shadow explained that the Chaos Emeralds were needed to reactivate the cannon, and that with it, Eggman would have the power to destroy the entire Earth. Eggman was excited by this prospect and announced his intention to take over the world by using the Eclipse Cannon to threaten the population into submission.
However, a thief known as Rouge the Bat had infiltrated Eggman's pyramid hideout and used his space transporter to follow the doctor to the ARK. Introducing herself to Eggman and Shadow, she offered to help them find the remaining Chaos Emeralds, offering one she had already obtained as a token of good faith. Eggman accepted the deal, but remained wary of this newcomer.
The three villains then returned to Earth and Rouge informed Eggman that the other Chaos Emeralds were on Prison Island. Eggman devised a plan for them to sneak into the base and grab the gems: while the doctor diverted G.U.N.'s forces by attacking the docked aircraft carrier, Shadow would infiltrate the armoury and plant a series of explosive charges while Rouge entered the main vault and swiped the emeralds. The trio would then have fifteen minutes to get off the island before the charges detonated the ammunition stores and blew up the entire base.
Despite a minor setback caused by Tails, Eggman and his allies accomplished their mission and escaped with the Chaos Emeralds. With six of the emeralds installed in the Eclipse Cannon, the doctor was ready to carry out his threat to the world and demonstrate the power at his disposal. Broadcasting from the ARK's control room, Dr. Eggman made an announcement to the entire population of Earth, demanding that they surrender to the Eggman Empire. He then fired the Eclipse Cannon at the moon, destroying an entire hemisphere before warning the world's nations to surrender within 24 hours.
Following his threat, Eggman discovered that Sonic was once again trying to thwart his plans and put his base on lockdown. He also detected a Chaos energy signature following Sonic, realising that Tails had the last Chaos Emerald. When Sonic and his friends infiltrated the doctor's base to steal a space shuttle, Eggman unleashed his Egg Golem robot to stop them. During its fight with Sonic, the Egg Golem's restraining mechanism was damaged and the robot went berserk, attacking Eggman. Eggman was forced to destroy his creation while Sonic's gang took off aboard a shuttle.
Eggman and Shadow would return to the ARK a short while later. Having detected another Chaos signature, Eggman believed that the heroes must have a fake emerald to try and trick him. The doctor found Amy Rose in the ARK's main research lab and held her at gunpoint, demanding that Sonic and Tails meet with him and hand over the Chaos Emerald. The heroes entered the facility and Sonic stepped into the centre of the room with the fake Chaos Emerald that Tails had made. Eggman then sprang his trap, dropping a capsule over Sonic and revealing that he knew about the fake emerald. When Tails asked how the doctor knew Sonic was carrying the fake, Eggman gloated and revealed that he didn't know until Tails had just told him.
Eggman launched Sonic into space and the capsule exploded once it was clear of the colony. Little did Eggman know, however, that Sonic was able to use Chaos Control, an ability that warped space and time. Even using a fake Chaos Emerald, Sonic was able to teleport back onto the ARK before the capsule exploded. In the meantime, Eggman fought against Tails over the real emerald and disabled the young fox's Cyclone mech. With the last emerald in hand, the doctor made his way to the ARK's control room, but his sensors detected something moving towards the Eclipse Cannon. He radioed Shadow, who was confronting Rouge after discovering that she was a government spy, and told him to investigate. Shadow made his way towards the cannon where, sure enough, the intruder turned out to be none other than Sonic.
Shadow and Sonic raced each other on the path to the Eclipse Cannon, with Sonic winning out in the end, or so it appeared. Just as Sonic inserted the fake Chaos Emerald into the cannon's firing chamber, Dr. Eggman slotted the real emerald into the control room console and laughed triumphantly as the cannon reached maximum power. But when the doctor attempted to fire the cannon, the entire station shook as its orbit began to decay.
On the console screen, an image of Eggman's grandfather Professor Gerald Robotnik appeared, declaring his revenge against humanity for the loss he had suffered. The professor stated that the ARK had been programmed to crash into the Earth once all seven Chaos Emeralds had been installed in the Eclipse Cannon and that the excess Chaos energy within the cannon's core would cause an explosion that would annihilate the planet.
Dr. Eggman realised that he would have no world to rule if his grandfather's revenge was completed, and so he was forced to join forces with Sonic and his friends to save the Earth. He and the heroes fought their way through the ARK's automated defences in order to reach the Eclipse Cannon's core where Knuckles would use the restored Master Emerald to neutralise the energy of the Chaos Emeralds. When they reached the core, they found it was being guarded by the Biolizard, the original Project: Shadow prototype that had been sealed away. It was then that Shadow the Hedgehog appeared to help the heroes, having been convinced by Amy Rose that humanity was worth fighting for and recalling his true memories that Prof. Gerald had altered before his demise.
While Shadow fought against the Biolizard, Sonic and Knuckles got the Master Emerald to the core and neutralised the Chaos Emeralds. However, the Biolizard reacted to this by using Chaos Control to fuse itself to the Eclipse Cannon, merging with the ARK and keeping it on its collision course. To stop the creature, Sonic and Shadow both used the Chaos Emeralds to transform into their Super States, flying out into space where they fought and ultimately killed the Biolizard. They then used Chaos Control to warp the ARK back into its original orbit, but Shadow appeared to exhaust his energy and fell to Earth, presumably dying during reentry.
Having helped his long-time enemies save the world, Dr. Eggman reflected on how he had admired his grandfather as a child and had been inspired to become a great scientist, wondering how Professor Gerald could have become so bitter towards humanity that he would want to destroy it. Unfortunately for Sonic and his friends, the experience hadn't proven to be all that enlightening; as Eggman left the ARK, he vowed that he would continue his efforts to conquer the world.
Sonic Heroes[]
Some time after the ARK incident, Dr. Eggman began working on numerous projects to further his ambitions of world conquest, including the construction of a fleet of aerial battleships and the revival of Shadow the Hedgehog. The doctor's robot minions had recovered Shadow's body after his fall from the ARK and found that he was still alive, but the ultimate life-form would not awaken. Eggman had hoped to brainwash Shadow into his service, but instead resorted to cloning him, developing a new army of androids in Shadow's likeness. Along with these developments, Eggman also decided to reactivate his favourite creation: Metal Sonic.
Metal Sonic was completely upgraded; his body was enhanced with nanotechnology and his programming was altered to allow for more creative thinking. He was also granted the ability to scan the bio-data of his enemies, allowing him to anticipate and counter whatever attacks were thrown at him. However, this advanced "Neo Metal Sonic" had also developed free will and a desire for power equal to that of his creator. Metal turned on Dr. Eggman and locked him up in a cell aboard the Final Fortress, the flagship of the new Egg Fleet. Using his new shape-shifting ability to assume Eggman's form, Metal took over the Eggman Empire and plotted to destroy Sonic and conquer the world himself.
While Metal Sonic was putting his plan into action, Eggman was locked away in a cell, though he was not entirely helpless. He somehow managed to ship away a package containing a radio to the Chaotix Detective Agency, contacting them via the radio in order to hire them to save him. Naturally, Eggman had to conceal his identity and distort his voice, otherwise the Chaotix would likely turn down the job. He was also able to send an anonymous tip to Rouge the Bat, telling her of a hidden treasure stashed away in one of the doctor's abandoned facilities. What Rouge found at the base was not treasure, but the deactivated E-Series robot E-123 Omega and the real Shadow the Hedgehog, still in stasis.
Eventually, the twelve heroes, divided into four teams, made their way to the Egg Fleet, destroying many of Eggman's forces before confronting the Egg Emperor aboard the Final Fortress. After the mech was destroyed, the Chaotix discovered that their mysterious client was Dr. Eggman himself and that the true enemy was Metal Sonic. Metal Sonic then appeared before the heroes atop the Final Fortress' command tower, demanding that they kneel before him before conjuring a bolt of lightning that struck the tower, causing it to explode. Having absorbed his enemies' bio-data as well as the power of Chaos from Chocola and Froggy, Neo Metal Sonic then fused with the tower's debris and transformed into a monstrous, dragon-like form called the Metal Overlord.
In his Overlord form, Metal Sonic was immensely powerful. However, Sonic and the others had acquired the Chaos Emeralds during their journey, which would even the odds against Metal. Team Dark, Team Rose and Team Chaotix kept Metal distracted whilst Sonic, Tails and Knuckles tried to harness the emeralds' power between the three of them. They succeeded and achieved their Super forms, following the Metal Overlord as it took to the sky.
Empowered by the Chaos Emeralds, Team Sonic were able to withstand whatever Metal Sonic threw at them. Using a super-charged Team Blast attack, the trio finally brought down the Metal Overlord which fell apart as it fell to the deck of the Final Fortress, until Metal Sonic's original form was all that was left. With Metal deactivated and the battle over, the heroes went their separate ways again while Eggman was left to reclaim control of his forces. Following this event, Metal Sonic was reprogrammed and had his free will erased, making him obedient to Eggman once more.
Shadow the Hedgehog[]
When the Earth was invaded by the vicious aliens known as the Black Arms, Dr. Eggman watched as G.U.N., as well as Sonic and his friends, fought to stop the aliens' onslaught. Seeing how much damage was being caused by the fighting between the military and the invaders, Eggman felt he had no choice but to intervene if he still wanted a world to rule. The doctor mobilised what was left of the Egg Fleet and deployed his new army of Shadow Androids to battle not only the Black Arms, but G.U.N. as well.
As the Eggman Empire entered the war, Eggman encountered Shadow the Hedgehog once more. The ultimate life-form was seeking the Chaos Emeralds in order to learn the truth about his past, but Eggman tried to take advantage of Shadow's amnesia and get the hedgehog on his side. He even tried to trick Shadow into believing that he was one of the doctor's androids, though Shadow would ultimately discover the truth when he confronted the Black Arms' leader, Black Doom.
Ultimately, Eggman contributed little to the war effort against the Black Arms. His interference only served to divert G.U.N.'s forces and attract the attention of the Chaotix who began sabotaging his forces. During Super Shadow's final battle against Devil Doom, Eggman contacted Shadow and admitted that he had lied to him and that Shadow really was the ultimate life-form that Professor Gerald had created. After the Black Arms had been wiped out, Eggman went back to his usual scheming, now having gained Shadow as a dangerous enemy.
Sonic Rush[]
At some point, Dr. Eggman was contacted by Eggman Nega, an individual from another dimension claiming to be the doctor's descendant. Nega wanted to aid the doctor in his plans for world conquest, inviting him to the Sol Dimension where he could obtain the power he would need to carry out his ambitions. In the Sol Dimension, Dr. Eggman, with Eggman Nega's help, managed to steal the mystical Sol Emeralds after defeating their guardian, Blaze the Cat. With the Sol Emeralds in their possession, the two mad scientists began working towards merging their universes together, which they intended to remake in their image.
As the doctors went about searching for the Chaos Emeralds in Eggman's dimension, their activities would be interrupted by Eggman's nemesis, Sonic. At the same time, Blaze had followed the doctors from her world in order to take back the Sol Emeralds. She fought against Eggman multiple times, reclaiming one of the emeralds with each victory. Meanwhile, Sonic was left to contend with Nega and gather the Chaos Emeralds before the doctors could. Both heroes would end up fighting each other after a misunderstanding between them, and Eggman and Nega would watch from the sidelines. After this battle, Blaze snatched the last Sol Emerald from Eggman while Nega escaped. Later, while Sonic and Blaze were putting their differences aside, the villains kidnapped Cream the Rabbit, with the present-day Eggman sending a letter claiming that he was holding the rabbit hostage and telling Blaze to meet him on her own. The two adversaries soon after had an epic showdown with Eggman piloting the Egg King, once again. However, he was defeated, and Blaze reunited with Cream.
Regrouping after their defeats, Eggman and Nega used their Egg Salamander to attack Blaze while she was alone and drain the Sol Emeralds of their power. Then, Sonic showed up with all seven Chaos Emeralds, which he knew how to keep stable. Regardless, the villains chose to depart to prepare themselves for their showdown with the hedgehog and make their interdimensional Eggmanland a reality. Soon after, they were confronted by Super Sonic and Burning Blaze, who destroyed their machine. After that, Sonic's and Blaze's dimensions separated.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]
After learning about a mysterious power known as the "Flames of Disaster", Dr. Eggman established a new base of operations in the kingdom of Soleanna. Intrigued by Soleanna's history and its worship of the sun-god Solaris, the doctor plotted to take over the region by kidnapping its new monarch, Princess Elise. With the princess and the Chaos Emerald that was in her possession, Eggman sought to unlock the Flames of Disaster and gain mastery over time itself.
On the night of the Festival of the Sun, Eggman launched an attack on the kingdom from his Egg Carrier battleship. After disrupting the festival, he introduced himself to Princess Elise and attempted to take her captive, but Sonic the Hedgehog suddenly arrived in the midst of the kidnapping and ran off with Elise after destroying several of the doctor's robots. Despite Sonic's interference, the doctor was successful in abducting the princess, although she threw her Chaos Emerald to Sonic to keep it out of Eggman's clutches. Eggman was not concerned, assured that the gem would be his in due time.
Sonic would follow the Egg Carrier to a desert region where he found both Eggman and Elise waiting for him in a dilapidated colosseum. There, the hedgehog fought against the doctor's giant Egg-Cerberus robot and defeated it before fleeing with Elise. Just as Sonic returned Elise home, however, he was confronted by a strange young hedgehog called Silver. While the two hedgehogs fought each other, Eggman showed up in his Egg Mobile and captured Elise once again, taking her back to his base in White Acropolis. The doctor would later send a message to Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, summoning them to his hideout and demanding that they bring the Chaos Emerald if they wanted Elise returned safely.
Sonic, Tails and Knuckles later visited White Acropolis where they entered Eggman's base. As per Eggman's instructions, Sonic surrendered the Chaos Emerald, placing it into a holding device that emerged from the floor of the chamber he was in. From the booth above, Eggman threw a switch that activated a forcefield around the chamber, trapping the heroes. He then unveiled his latest creation, the Solaris Machine: a prototype time machine that Eggman planned on using to manipulate the timeline in order to dominate the world. Throwing another switch, the doctor transported Sonic and his friends to another time. He did not know where/when they were sent as the Solaris Machine still required adjustments. In order to complete the machine and realise his goals, Eggman needed the Flames of Disaster, a power that Elise herself possessed within her.
While Eggman had seemingly been rid of Sonic, his operations in Soleanna had also drawn the attention of G.U.N., who had sent Shadow the Hedgehog and Rouge the Bat to investigate. After Rouge was captured whilst infiltrating Eggman's base, Shadow fought his way inside to rescue her. While inside the base, Rouge had stolen a relic known as the Scepter of Darkness, another component of the Solaris Project conducted by the former Duke of Soleanna. When Eggman learned of the theft, he and his robots followed Shadow and Rouge to Kingdom Valley and attempted to reclaim the scepter. Unfortunately, the scepter was shattered during the confrontation, releasing a malevolent entity that was trapped inside. This entity, which would come to be known as Mephiles the Dark, destroyed Eggman's robots, prompting the doctor to flee from the scene.
While the doctor was busy trying to retrieve the Scepter of Darkness, Princess Elise had managed to escape from imprisonment with the help of Amy Rose. Eggman would pursue her once more, managing to capture her whilst Sonic - who had somehow returned from his time-travel misadventure - was caught up with fighting Silver once more. However, Shadow would intervene and keep Silver at bay whilst Sonic went after Elise, saving her once more. Elise was soon returned home, but Eggman would come for her yet again, threatening to use the Egg Carrier to destroy the entire kingdom unless she gave herself up. With no other options, Elise surrendered to Eggman and was taken aboard his ship.
While on the way to retrieve a Chaos Emerald detected on radar, the Egg Carrier suffered a catastrophic engine malfunction. This led to the ship crashing and the deaths of both Dr. Eggman and Elise. This also resulted in the release of Iblis, the demonic entity sealed within Elise herself. However, using the Chaos Emeralds they had obtained, Sonic and Silver created a space-time rift, allowing Sonic to travel back to before the Egg Carrier crashed. Arriving in Eggman's headquarters, Sonic boarded the Egg Carrier as it took off in order to save the princess. Dr. Eggman then fought Sonic himself with his Egg-Wyvern mech on the battleship's underbelly, but Sonic defeated him and rescued Elise before the ship crashed into a cliffside.
A while later, Sonic was killed by Mephiles in front of Elise, causing her to accidentally unleash Iblis, allowing both halves to reunite into Solaris and begin destroying the world. In consequence, Eggman, who had survived the previous incident, found himself caught in a space-time rift alongside Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, Rouge, Omega, and a dead Sonic. As all hope was lost, Elise proposed finding the seven Chaos Emeralds to revive Sonic. As such, the team of heroes and villains got to work to obtain them. Afterwards, with the gems' power, the dead hedgehog was resuscitated and transformed into Super Sonic. He would then transfer part of his power to Shadow and Silver, turning them into Super Shadow and Super Silver respectively. Meanwhile, Eggman and the others would watch as the transformed hedgehogs fought against Solaris in a mighty showdown.
After Elise extinguished Solaris when it was just a tiny flame, the events of the entire incident were then undone, thus ensuring that none of Eggman's actions during this period ever happened.
Sonic Rivals[]
In Sonic Rivals, Eggman's forces were taken over by Eggman Nega, who sought to dispose of his ancestor to undo all of his failures and thus make the future society recognise his brilliance. Afterwards, the villain from the future masqueraded as the doctor himself and cornered him. In desperation, Eggman sent a transmission to Shadow pleading for help before getting turned into a card by Nega's new camera. Fortunately, around six hours later, he was restored at the Death Yard thanks to Shadow and Silver's efforts. In gratitude, he helped escort the two hedgehogs to Nega's Meteor Base in order to foil his descendant's plans.
Sonic Rush Adventure[]
Despite their enmity during their last encounter, Eggman formed a partnership with Eggman Nega once more to create Eggmanland, this time by harnessing the so-called "Power of the Stars", a force greater than the Chaos and Sol Emeralds combined. The key to unlocking this power, however, was the Jeweled Scepter, an ancient artifact located somewhere on Earth in the Sol Dimension. To find the scepter, the doctors created Captain Whisker and his crew of robotic pirates, and send them out to search for it. In the meantime, the doctors had to find the place in which to use the Jeweled Scepter to unlock the Power of the Stars, which they discovered was beneath Southern Island thanks to Nega's research.
Although Whisker and his crew were defeated by Sonic, Tails, Blaze, and Marine, Eggman and Nega managed to steal the Jeweled Scepter themselves. They soon after appeared at Southern Island with their Egg Wizard mech and gloated about their master plan to the heroes before heading underground. Down below, in Deep Core, the villains used the machine to tap into the Power of the Stars with the Jeweled Scepter, giving it incredible power. However, Sonic and Blaze used the Chaos and Sol Emeralds to become Super Sonic and Burning Blaze respectively to combat the doctors. As the Egg Wizard ended up on the verge of defeat, a gleeful Eggman Nega decided to use the mech's "Planet-Buster Laser" to destroy Super Sonic, Burning Blaze and the world, causing Eggman to panic. Fortunately, the Egg Wizard got distracted by an energy blast from Marine, which gave the transformed heroes the opening needed for them to destroy the mech, thus foiling Eggman's ambitions once more.
Sonic Rivals 2[]
When Eggman Nega began masquerading as him once again, Dr. Eggman discovered that his descendant had obtained secret files left behind by his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik. These files described an ancient creature known as the Ifrit, which Nega planned to awaken using the Chaos Emeralds in order to destroy the world. To stop this, Eggman sent Metal Sonic to enlist the help of Shadow.
Throughout the adventure, Eggman would communicate to Shadow through Metal Sonic, telling him what to do and revealing what Eggman Nega was up to. By the time the hedgehog and the robot had got to the Neon Palace, however, Nega had taken over the doctor's Badniks and had them destroy his base, putting him in trouble. Fortunately, Shadow destroyed the rogue robots, allowing the villain to regain control of his fortress. When the duo was approaching the Mystic Haunt, Eggman, seeing that the signal with Metal Sonic was breaking up, went to the mansion himself to help Shadow. Unfortunately, the doctor's descendant had managed to open up the portal to the Ifrit's universe despite only having six of the Chaos Emeralds, but the villain told the black hedgehog that there was a switch in that dimension that would close the portal and prevent the beast from causing havok. Shadow and Metal Sonic later managed to do so and returned to Sonic's universe using Chaos Control while leaving Nega trapped in the Ifrit's dimension.
Sonic Unleashed[]
After researching the ancient Gaia Manuscripts, Dr. Eggman came up with his most ambitious scheme yet to build Eggmanland. He began by assembling a fleet of battleships in orbit above the planet, but this was merely to attract the attention of Sonic. When Sonic boarded Eggman's flagship, the doctor fought against him in an assault mech, but Sonic used the Chaos Emeralds to turn into Super Sonic and destroy the machine. Eggman then fled in his Egg Mobile to a satellite weapons platform, with Super Sonic giving chase and destroying most of the doctor's fleet along the way.
Super Sonic cornered Eggman inside the satellite's control room and the doctor feigned surrender, pretending to show remorse for his actions. When Sonic let his guard down, Eggman sprung a trap, activating a series of restraining devices in the floor that generated an energy field that not only held Sonic in place but drained the Chaos Emeralds of their energy. The Chaos energy was channeled into the satellite weapon which Eggman then fired, unleashing a beam that struck the Earth and shattered it. However, the planet's fragments did not scatter into space but remained in close proximity to the world's core. The Chaos energy blast had caused something to stir within the core: a primordial creature known as Dark Gaia which had existed since the beginning of time. When Dark Gaia awoke, Sonic underwent an unexpected transformation, turning into a werehog. After witnessing Sonic's transformation, Eggman sealed himself inside an enclosed dome as he depressurised the chamber, blowing Sonic and the Chaos Emeralds out into space where they hurtled towards the continent of Apotos.
In hindsight, Eggman regretted discarding the Chaos Emeralds along with Sonic, but continued to push forward with his plan to harness the power of Dark Gaia. When Dark Gaia awoke, it collapsed upon itself and its essence scattered across the broken planet. The dark fragments would affect the emotions of people around the world or would otherwise manifest physically into strange, aggressive creatures. While Eggman dispatched his Badnik forces to secure the Gaia Temples around the world, he also constructed a beacon at his base that would attract Dark Gaia's minions, allowing him to absorb their energy to fuel the construction of Eggmanland.
Over the course of several days, Eggman continued to build his perfect city while Sonic went travelling around the world with his new friend, Chip. Chip was, in fact, the Light Gaia, the counterpart to Dark Gaia. Both entities were essential to the planet's natural cycle of destruction and rebirth, a cycle that Eggman had disturbed in pursuit of his selfish goal. Though his forces had attempted to hold the Gaia Temples, Sonic was able to enter them one by one, placing a Chaos Emerald upon an altar to re-energize it and awaken the temple, allowing the planetary fragments to pull themselves back together.
Eventually, only one continent had yet to be restored, the continent where Eggmanland had been built. The last Gaia Temple was hidden beneath the city's foundation, and so Sonic and Chip were dropped into the absurd complex by Tails from the Tornado. Switching between his normal and werehog forms, Sonic tore his way through Eggman's defences and reached the city's lowest level. There, Eggman battled Sonic with his latest combat mech, the Egg Dragoon. The battle saw the two adversaries plummet towards the Earth's molten core as Eggman tried frantically to prevent Sonic from accessing the final temple. The doctor ultimately wasn't prepared for Werehog Sonic's ferocity and raw brute strength; the werehog tore his way through the Egg Dragoon's armour, pulling the doctor's Egg Mobile free from the mech and throwing it aside, letting the damaged Egg Dragoon plummet into the molten core.
Although Sonic had gotten the last Chaos Emerald to the temple, Dark Gaia had reconstituted and emerged from the Earth's core. Eggman ordered Dark Gaia to destroy Sonic once and for all, but the eldritch monster swatted the Egg Mobile aside like a fly. When the Chaos Emeralds began to resonate, each of the Gaia Temples shifted and joined together to form the Light Gaia Colossus, which Chip/Light Gaia took direct control of. The movement of the temples had destroyed the foundation that Eggmanland had been built upon, causing Eggman's dream city to collapse into the Earth's core.
The Egg Mobile crashed on the surface and when Eggman recovered, he saw a cracked, empty plateau where Eggmanland once stood. Sonic and Chip had defeated Dark Gaia thanks to the power of the Chaos Emeralds, both Gaias had returned to dormancy and the planet had been made whole once again. Eggman's robot lackey Orbot tried to reassure Eggman that he could always try again, though brazenly insulted him at the same time. The doctor became enraged and attempted to kick Orbot, only to miss and suffer an embarrassing pratfall.
Sonic Colours[]
For his next great plot, Dr. Eggman constructed a colossal theme park in outer space, connected to a number of small planets. Supposedly, Eggman had built the theme park as a means of making amends for his previous crimes, but in reality the park was merely a cover for his next evil scheme.
Eggman had been capturing the inhabitants of one of the linked planets, the Wisps, in order to harvest their natural "Hyper-go-on" energy. With it, Eggman could power his latest weapon: a mind-control ray built into the core of the amusement park that would be projected at the Earth, brainwashing the entire population in one fell swoop. However, Sonic and Tails weren't convinced of Eggman's apparent reformation and had entered the park to investigate. Surely enough, they discovered Eggman imprisoning and abusing the Wisps, and upon freeing them, the Wisps helped Sonic by offering him their power.
After sabotaging the Hyper-go-on generators powering the mind-control ray, Sonic sent Tails back down to Earth while he confronted Eggman. Eggman fought Sonic in his Nega-Wisp Armour, but Sonic used the combined power of the Wisps he had saved to evade all of Eggman's attacks and destroy the doctor's mecha. Sonic then fled down the space elevator shaft before the amusement park exploded, releasing the planets that had been linked to it. Meanwhile, Eggman was stuck in his Egg Mobile, drifting through space with only his annoying minions Orbot and Cubot for company.
Sonic Generations[]
After drifting through space for several days following the destruction of his interstellar theme park, Eggman discovered a strange entity that could erase time and space, and decided to use it to erase his past defeats. He left Orbot and Cubot stranded in space and followed the creature through time. However, he needed another genius to help control this creation, coming to the conclusion that the only one smart enough to help him was himself. Thus, Eggman travelled back to the time he had first fought Sonic on the Death Egg and rescued his past self.
The two Eggmen, naming this primordial creation the Time Eater, executed a plan to undo their past defeats at Sonic's hands. They travelled to Green Hill, causing a white fade while Classic Sonic looked on in wonder. The Time Eater then travelled to the present to ruin Modern Sonic's birthday party by kidnapping all of Sonic's friends and sending them to different time-zones to bait their traps. Sonic failed to stop the Time Eater and found himself within White Space, a timeless void filled with fragments of locations and events from the past.
Sonic and Tails would team up with their past selves to find their missing friends and to put a stop to the Time Eater. Along the way, they would battle past enemies and collect the seven Chaos Emeralds, which were somehow unaffected by the Time Eater's temporal erasure. The heroes would find out about the Time Eater's true origin when both Eggmen revealed themselves and their plan, intending to remove both Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic from time (although Classic Eggman ended up disturbed that he might become crazy when witnessing Modern Eggman breaking down into hysterical laughter). Early in the battle, both Sonics were unable to stop the doctors' creation, but after transforming into Super Sonics and enduring the intense battle, both doctors were defeated once again and all of Sonic's friends were returned to their world and time. Classic Sonic and Tails stuck around in the present long enough to enjoy the rest of Modern Sonic's birthday party before travelling back to their own dimension.
Meanwhile, both Eggmen got stuck in White Space with no way out. After arguing whether or not they would ever win, Classic Eggman thought that maybe he would instead pursue his "teaching degree" after these events, to which Modern Eggman agreed as he enjoyed telling people what to do.
Both Classic and Modern Eggman would eventually return to their respective dimensions, though how they managed to escape White Space is unknown.
Sonic Lost World[]
After discovering the sub-orbital continent of Lost Hex, Dr. Eggman established a new base of operations there. Using an ancient relic known as the Cacophonic Conch, the doctor was able to enslave the Deadly Six, a group of monstrous Zeti that lived on the floating continent.
As Eggman began abducting animals to turn into Badniks, he was pursued by Sonic and Tails who followed him to Lost Hex. The doctor was able to shoot down the Tornado which crash-landed in Windy Hill, and sent the Deadly Six to eliminate the heroes while the doctor made the finishing touches to his latest invention: the Extractor. This machine was capable of draining the life energy from the planet below to fuel Eggman's robots and to weaken the population of the planet so that they could not resist Eggman's eventual takeover.
After encountering Sonic in the Desert Ruins, Eggman attempts to use the Cacophonic Conch to force the Zeti to attack the hedgehog. Sonic notices the conch and kicks it out of Eggman's grasp, sending it flying far away. The Deadly Six, no longer bound to Eggman's control, use their innate power over magnetic fields to hijack the doctor's Badnik horde. Sonic and Tails flee from the scene with Eggman, Orbot and Cubot following close behind.
With his entire operation under the Zeti's control, Eggman reluctantly agrees to work with Sonic and Tails to ensure their survival. Meanwhile, the Deadly Six have taken control of Eggman's Extractor and use it to completely drain all the life energy from Sonic's world, killing the planet and everyone on it in order to make themselves more powerful.
When Sonic, Eggman, Orbot and Cubot arrived at Lava Mountain, Zomom and Zazz started attacking them with large rocks, destroying the bridge the heroes were on and seemingly forcing Eggman to sacrifice his life to save his arch-nemesis. However, after Sonic defeated the Deadly Six, Eggman revealed that he had survived his fall by utilizing a jetpack and had spent the time that Sonic was fighting the Zeti to activate a mech powered by the energy the Extractor had absorbed. Even with his mech's enormous powers, however, Eggman was soundly defeated by Sonic while Tails managed to restore the planet's energy. Eggman tried to flee using the jetpack he had used earlier, but Sonic had removed one of its exhaust pipes while Eggman was unconscious, sending the doctor plummeting back to Earth. However, Eggman had actually survived his fall but got stuck in a patch of soft dirt: Orbot and Cubot managed to rescue the doctor, but not before a rabbit gnawed off half of his moustache.
Sonic Forces[]
One fateful day, a dimensional rift opened in the sky, dropping a mysterious gemstone on the doorstep of Dr. Eggman's lair. The doctor picked the gem up, and upon being touched, the gem created a vision of Eggmanland. Shocked by the sudden manifestation of his greatest dream, Eggman dropped the jewel and the vision then disappeared. Intrigued, the doctor began conducting extensive research on the jewel, which he would later name the Phantom Ruby.
While studying the Phantom Ruby, Eggman's lab was attacked by a mercenary group called Jackal Squad. Because he had spent so much time researching the ruby instead of maintaining his defences, Eggman had no Badniks with which to stop the intruders. Reacting to the doctor's outrage, the Phantom Ruby generated several Egg Pawn replicas that attacked Jackal Squad. However, the squad's leader charged at Eggman and attempted to kill the doctor, but his sword inadvertently touched the Phantom Ruby, triggering it and generating an illusion of a desolate wasteland. Impressed by the leader's abilities and his vision, Eggman offered to make him the leader of his army, which the captain accepted. Eggman later tested out the Phantom Ruby's powers on Angel Island, leaving Knuckles and Silver to the Ruby's illusions. After Knuckles and Silver reverted the Phantom Ruby's effects, Eggman watched them take off and was delighted that the test was a success.
Eggman would conduct further research on the Phantom Ruby at his laboratory in Mystic Jungle, employing Jackal Squad to defend it. During this time, the doctor was able to produce several duplicates of the Phantom Ruby, but these prototypes were defective and could not be activated by anyone without an exceptional degree of mental fortitude. Shadow the Hedgehog would eventually learn of the lab's existence and attacked it, wiping out all of Jackal Squad with the exception of its leader, whom Shadow considered too weak to be worth the effort.
Enraged, the Jackal Squad's leader volunteered to be a part of Dr. Eggman's experiments, desiring the power to crush all his enemies and to never again be regarded as weak. After a long, painful series of procedures, the leader became Eggman's ultimate weapon, having a Phantom Ruby prototype bonded to his body and gaining all of its fantastic powers. From then on, the "ultimate mercenary" became known as Infinite.
After putting Infinite's abilities to the test by having him defeat the rogue Badnik E-123 Omega, Dr. Eggman initiated his ultimate plan to expand the Eggman Empire across the planet, declaring all-out war on the world. With the power of the Phantom Ruby, Infinite was capable of spawning an unlimited number of replicas to serve as Eggman's army along with the doctor's own robot minions. Faced by overwhelming odds and lacking any real combat ability of their own, many territories were conquered swiftly. But Eggman's greatest triumph would come when Sonic the Hedgehog attempted to thwart his invasion of Sunset City.
Responding to Eggman's attack, Sonic rushed to the city and smashed every Badnik in sight, rescuing Tails and a group of frightened citizens. Eggman then appeared, accompanied by several villains that Sonic had fought previously: Metal Sonic, Chaos, Zavok of the Deadly Six, and even Shadow the Hedgehog. What Sonic didn't realise was that these enemies were merely Phantom Ruby replicas created by Infinite, who joined in the fight and had his phantoms overwhelm Sonic with a combined assault. Eggman gloated as Sonic was beaten into unconsciousness, then taken away by Infinite.
Following his defeat, Sonic was imprisoned by Eggman, later transferred to the rebuilt Death Egg where he remained locked up for six months. During this time, the Eggman Empire conquered 99% of the planet, with the remaining 1% being held by a rag-tag Resistance commanded by Knuckles the Echidna and Amy Rose. Dr. Eggman built countless factories across his empire that constantly produced new robots and weapons to fuel his war effort, while at the same time heavily polluting the environment and turning once-lush locations into lifeless desert. As for Sonic, he remained alive aboard the Death Egg whilst being repeatedly tortured, as Eggman wanted his hated nemesis to witness his final victory before being executed. Much to Eggman's frustration, Sonic was freed from captivity by a Resistance rookie that had infiltrated the Death Egg and brought him back to Earth.
The Eggman Empire would have more than one Sonic to contend with, however, as Sonic's Classic counterpart had arrived from his own dimension after an altercation with his world's Eggman, who had also abused the power of the Phantom Ruby. While Eggman was discussing his final endgame with Infinite in Green Hill, Tails and Classic Sonic overheard their discussion and learned that Infinite had been busy disposing of the Phantom Ruby prototypes so that they couldn't be used against Eggman. Shortly after Infinite took his leave, however, Eggman was attacked by Classic Sonic. Eggman initially attempted to disengage from fighting Classic Sonic due to viewing him as not worth his time, but ultimately fought him with an Egg Dragoon mech, before being beaten. Already confident in his victory against the Resistance, he took the loss in stride, and even proceeded to gloat to Tails and Classic Sonic that his plan to wipe them out would be accomplished in three days' time before taking his leave.
While his army fought the Resistance for him, Eggman began shifting his forces to the Eggman Empire Fortress in preparation for his plan to wipe out the Resistance. This left his HQ in Metropolis undermanned, prompting the Resistance to launch a full, frontal assault on the city. Eggman, while surprised by the Resistance's boldness, took care of them by sending Infinite, who forced the Resistance to retreat. Despite their losses, the Resistance managed to uncover the Phantom Ruby's weakness, reclaim portions of the world, and blow up the Death Egg, which also served as a energy source for the Phantom Rubies.
Infuriated by the Resistance, Eggman and Infinite retreated to Metropolis until their final plan could be executed. There, Eggman was found by Sonic and Tails, who sought to capture him. However, the villain revealed one of his trump cards by instructing Infinite to form a portal into Null Space, which sucked in both Sonic and the Rookie after the latter attempted to save Sonic. Tails voiced his shock at the Phantom Ruby's continued power despite the Death Egg's destruction. In response, Eggman revealed that he had a backup power-source hidden beneath his Imperial Fortress. While losing his city to the Resistance however, Eggman saw, much to his shock, that Sonic and the Rookie had escaped from Null Space. Infuriated, he retreated to his fortress to enact his final plan.
When the Resistance came to the fortress to end the war, they fought the hundreds of replicas of Chaos, Shadow, Metal Sonic, and Zavok that were under Infinite's control. Despite Omega showing up aid to the Resistance, Infinite enacted Eggman's endgame: using his Phantom Ruby prototype, Infinite created a second sun, which began a collision course with the planet. Eggman then revealed his intentions to use this sun to completely destroy the Resistance. However, Eggman's doomsday plan was foiled when the Rookie used a Phantom Ruby prototype Infinite had missed to neutralize the second sun. Expressing disbelief that his plans were once again ruined, Eggman had his fleet, army, and Infinite launch a defensive attack. Meanwhile, Sonic and the Rookie soundly defeated Infinite. Eggman then arrived and expressed his admiration for Sonic's ability to always impress him. Revealing that he had one final play in hand however, Eggman retreated while the Resistance destroyed the backup reactor for his Phantom Rubies.
While Sonic believed that they had won, Eggman reappeared in his Mega Death Egg Robot with the original Phantom Ruby incorporated into it. Proclaiming himself as Infinite's successor, Eggman used the ruby to conjure up thousands of replicas to fight the Resistance. When Classic Sonic and the Rookie managed to destroy the outer shell of the robot, Eggman ejected the core and created a dimension to have his final battle with them and Sonic. In the end, Eggman was defeated when the trio dealt his mech a final blow that destroyed the Phantom Ruby. As the mech exploded, the dimension collapsed and all the replicas disappeared, allowing the Resistance to claim victory. Eggman had disappeared following the battle, but the heroes were sure that they had not seen the last of him.
Sonic Frontiers[]
After discovering the mysterious Starfall Islands, Dr. Eggman travelled there where he established a research outpost. Assisted by his latest creation, an artificial intelligence named Sage, Eggman studied the advanced technology left behind by the long-forgotten civilization known as the Ancients. He attempted to interface Sage with one of the relics on Kronos Island in order to obtain the vast stores of digitized knowledge within, but the relic reacted and pulled the doctor inside.
Eggman would find himself trapped inside a digital realm known as Cyber Space. From his perspective, the digital dimension appeared to include areas resembling locations he had previously visited, such as Green Hill of South Island and the United Federation capital of Central City. Sage was able to protect the doctor from whatever threats lay within Cyber Space, but she could not release him from it. While trapped, Eggman attempted to study his surroundings and quantify the vast data stores within.
When Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends visited the Starfall Islands in search of the Chaos Emeralds, Sage would attempt to take control of the various robots left behind by the Ancients in order to eliminate Sonic as he struggled to rescue his friends who had become trapped between the real and digital worlds. Sage would regularly update Eggman on everything occurring on the islands whilst running simulations to determine a way to free her creator, though she also sensed another presence within Cyber Space, one that could not be allowed to escape.
Sage would later draw the conclusion that the best chance for Eggman to escape Cyber Space would be to form an alliance with Sonic. The doctor was outraged by this revelation, refusing to resort to such measures and told Sage to find another way to get him out. Eventually, despite all of the interference from Sage and the island's robots, Sonic would disable the systems keeping his friends trapped in Cyber Space. This would free them and Eggman, but also released a malevolent entity known as The End, which had been responsible for wiping out the Ancients before being imprisoned. Now free, The End sought to destroy the entire planet.
Reluctantly, Dr. Eggman allied with Sonic at Sage's suggestion, telling him to find the remaining Chaos Emeralds so that he could save the world. The doctor would find the last emerald himself, giving it to Sonic so that he could transform into Super Sonic and fight The End, which had possessed the Supreme Titan. Sonic would defeat the Titan, but The End would manifest into a physical form resembling a moon that appeared in orbit. Sage would assume control of the Supreme in order to help Sonic fight the entity, and Eggman could do nothing but wait and hope that his "daughter" would return to him. Sonic and Sage would defeat The End, but Sage appeared to sacrifice herself in the process. As a shower of stellar debris fell from the sky, Eggman stood alone on a cliff, silently mourning Sage's loss.
However, some time after leaving the Starfall Islands, Eggman stood in his hideout, busy typing away at a computer. After inputting a command, the Ancients' symbol appeared on his monitor, accompanied by a familiar voice addressing him as "Father".

Personality[]
Doctor Eggman is a self-described genius and a master of the mechanical sciences. He is not humble about his abilities, either, frequently bragging about his expertise and accomplishments. He possesses an IQ of 300 and an even greater ego; his intellect and scientific prowess have instilled within him the delusion that he has the right to control the world and that the world will be better off under his rule. To accomplish his goal of world domination, Eggman will resort to virtually any dirty tactic he needs to, including threatening or manipulating others into assisting him in his plans.
Eggman is a greedy, selfish, egotistical narcissist who believes that his is the most superior mind in the world, and he will go to great lengths to make sure that everyone knows it. He is a shameless self-promoter who likes to make grandiose spectacles of his plans, announcing himself dramatically to his enemies and would-be subjects rather than carry out his operations with discretion. He is narcissistic to the point that he likes to personalize his machines by plastering his likeness onto them.
Despite his intellect and age, Doctor Eggman is also very immature. He has a child-like temperament, which is evident in the design of some of his robots and facilities; he has built numerous theme parks over the course of his villainous career and filled them with thematically-appropriate robots. He doesn't always think his plans through or take into account the inevitable interference of Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends, hinting toward an inability to plan for the long-term. When his schemes ultimately fall apart, the doctor is also prone to throwing temper tantrums like a child.
While there are many horrible aspects to his persona, Eggman is not entirely without saving graces. He has shown a begrudging respect for his arch-nemesis Sonic, whom he considers a worthy adversary and even admires to a degree. This respect also extends to Tails, who is a child prodigy and perhaps just as intelligent as Eggman himself. Eggman's most notable redeeming quality is his tenacity; he absolutely refuses to give up no matter how many times Sonic ruins his plans, considering each defeat as little more than a minor setback. It is also important to note that Eggman is also capable of compassion despite all of his faults; he created the artificial intelligence Sage not only to be his assistant, but considers her to be his daughter. During the Starfall Islands incident, he expressed pride in her abilities as she worked to protect him and free him from Cyber Space. He also expressed great sadness when Sage sacrificed herself to stop The End and was overjoyed when he managed to reclaim her program later.
Notable creations[]
Doctor Eggman has created countless robots and machines to help him in his quest to conquer the world. Listed below are some of his most noteworthy creations, ranging from robotic minions to massive mobile fortresses.
- Badniks - Doctor Eggman's robotic labour and military force is made up of various models coming in all shapes and sizes. Initially, these robots were powered by living animals crammed inside their chassis', but have since been powered by more conventional energy sources.
